Huge BBC comedy show ‘axed’ after three series as star says ‘I hate to say it’

A hugely popular BBC comedy show is reportedly been axed after airing three series.

Motherland fans from all over are furious about reports that the programme has been cancelled. Since its premiere on BBC Two in 2016, this sitcom that follows the life of middle-class mums in suburban London brought joy to viewers through three series and two Christmas specials for eight years.

However, the journey comes to an end as BBC bosses have decided not to renew the show. Diane Morgan, playing the character Liz, a single mum on the show, confirmed the sad news recently. Seeing her fans saddened by the news she said: “I hate to say it, because I still get women running up to me with prams in the street asking me when it’s coming back.”

But you never know, as Diane suggested there could be a spin-off focussing on Amanda, a character from Motherland. She commented: “It’ll live on through her. The ladies with the prams will be pleased, hopefully.”, reports the Mirror. Daily Star has reached out to a BBC spokesperson for a comment.

Fans were all left saying the same thing as it was reported that the show had been quietly axed. “Noooo. I love that show,” one fan wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, over the weekend. “Sobbing shaking crying screaming throwing up but also can you imagine an amanda spinoff. I need to see that tbh,” another added, with a third writing: “WHAT? ! This is easily the best BBC comedy in YEARS! Gutted.”

Motherland, which last aired new content over the 2022 festive period, starred Line of Duty star Anna Maxwell Martin, Lucy Punch, Paul Ready, Phillipa Dunne and Tanya Moodle. The three series and Christmas specials followed working mother Julia trying to navigate parenting with the help of other local mothers.

An American version of the BBC comedy had been in the works but was scrapped last year. In June, Deadline reported that ABC had passed on Ellie Kemper-led Keeping It Together, the proposed US remake of Motherland. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt star Ellie had been due to executive produce and star in the now cancelled show. Ellie was going to play Julia in a show called Keeping It Together, which is based on Sharon Horgan’s hit British show.

The story was about Julia figuring out how to juggle work and kids with the help of her pals Calvin and Liz. The show’s description said: “With the help of new friends Calvin and Liz, Julia discovers she just might succeed at balancing work and parenting from time to time,” and added a funny bit: “This is a comedy for anybody who’s dropped their kids at school, breathed a sigh of relief … then realised it’s Sunday.” Sharon Horgan was going to be the boss of the show, and Michael Showalter was set to direct it.
