One woman sliced off her own husband’s penis.
Lorena Bobbitt went on trial for chopping her husband’s penis off in 1993 and the world was gripped by her story. ITV’s documentary I Cut Off His Penis: The Truth Behind The Headlines explores other cases around the world, including the USA and Thailand, that are similar to Bobbitt’s story.
The show will hear from women who have done the same thing, the men who were cut and the surgeons that have worked to re-attach penises after being chopped off.

John and Lorena met in 1988 and were married just a year later, but things began to change as they settled in Virginia and John was discharged from the Marines. John reportedly struggled to find a job and he told ABC News back in 2019 that they were fighting a lot.

In an interview with ABC News back in 1993, Lorena had alleged that John hit her for the first time just one month into their marriage. However, John claimed that he had attempted to “subdue” her as she was “jealous and possessive”.
Fights escalated and domestic violence complaints were issued “half a dozen times” as revealed by retired sergeant Kim Chinn. During one particular incident, both John and Lorena were charged with assault and battery.

Lorena alleged that John forced her to have sex and raped her a number of times. She claimed through her attorney Blair Howard that John was “excited by violent sex” and that she felt “trapped” – John denies raping Lorena or enjoying violent sex.
John asked for a divorce and claimed he “begged” Lorena as she didn’t believe in the notion. After a night of drinking alcohol, Lorena claims that he forced himself on her a raped her, while John claims Lorena was awake and made advances to him.
Lorena then left the room and has explained what happened after: “I pick up the knife and…I went back to the bedroom. I took the sheets off and I cut him. Everything went just fast.”

John claims he was asleep when this happened: “I sprung up and I was bleeding, I was applying pressure, then immediately I thought it was something out of a horror movie. A nightmare…turned into reality.”
Lorena fled the scene with the knife and John’s penis, threw his genitalia out the window and drove off before calling the police. His penis was eventually re-attached after a nine and a half hour operation.
On 22 January 1994, a jury found Lorena Bobbitt not guilty by reason of temporary insanity and was ordered to spend five weeks in a mental hospital.
