‘I impersonate iconic UK comedian and his ghost keeps visiting me – I even talk to him’

A Tommy Cooper impersonator is convinced he’s been visited by the comedy legend’s ghost.

John Hewer has felt his presence on multiple occasions over the years. He told the Daily Star Sunday: “I do believe in spirits. There have been times I’ve felt the spirit of someone I’m playing.

“It’s happened when I’ve been playing Tommy Cooper. It’s definitely happened with him. It happens when you become comfortable with the material. Things drop into your mind.

“Then they just come out of your mouth. They feel instinctively the right thing to say.”

John has even spoken to Tommy’s ghost many times.

He added: “I have always thanked Tommy after each show.”

The production featured some of his best-loved gags and got rave reviews.

Whenever he is doing a show, he always makes sure he honours Tommy, who died on stage in 1984.

John said: “Tommy Cooper was a very superstitious man. He would always place his fez a certain way round when he left it on the dressing table.

“He would always have it so the gap where your head goes was always facing up.

“So I would always do that. Why wouldn’t I? It was partly out of respect and partly about keeping that part of him alive a bit longer. I feel like it’s important to do.”
