‘I went to see Thundercat perform live – I was in a trance from start to finish’

I had no idea what to expect when I rocked up to watch Thundercat live.

The posters that adorned the venue promised an “immersive” experience and once inside KOKO’s famous doors, the audience were greeted by a huge backdrop emblazoned with a psychedelic cat. The eyes cast down onto the stage as we eagerly anticipated his arrival and sure enough, it was everything I could have ever imagined.

Anyone who listens to Thundercat knows the incredible riffs and jazzy bridges that transport you to his own kaleidoscopic universe, so to hear them live was quite the experience.

I’ve been lucky enough to experience a lot of live music throughout my life and it’s no secret that not every artist has vocals strong enough to carry an entire show. However, I was pleasantly surprised to hear his singing voice was as good, if not better than, how he sounds through my earphones.

Stephen Lee Bruner has a distinctively unique sound with a favour for high notes reminiscent of the Bee Gees the stage presence to match. Within a matter of minutes, the musician charmed his audience with sweet stories about missing his cats and an anecdote about hosting a FaceTime call with his furry pals.

Above all, Bruner seemed like a genuine guy who wanted nothing more than to please his fans and entertain the crowd. There’s nothing worse than paying an arm and a leg for a ticket and the artists look like they couldn’t care less (speaking from experience, it leaves a sour taste in your mouth).

The show was noticeably understated – no flashy lights or smoke machines or any of the usual stuff. Aside from the giant feline mural there wasn’t much going on, but that was the beauty of it – he didn’t need any of the typical frills and fluff to put on a stellar performance.

His set went on for roughly two hours with a lot of improvisation between Thundercat and his musicians that left no face in the venue without a smile. True star quality with an infectious smile and a humble attitude, despite working with some of the best in the biz.

If you get a chance, make sure you bag a ticket to one of his shows in the future – and be prepared for an unforgettable night.
