Ian Hislop taxi ‘shooting’ update as Met Police investigate black cab incident

Police have provided an update after a suspected gunshot hit Ian Hislop’s taxi.

The Have I Got News for You star and Private Eye editor was riding in the back of a taxi in London’s Soho just after 10am on Tuesday morning (October 1) when a suspected gunshot hit the vehicle. His taxi driver told Scotland Yard he was stationary in traffic when he heard what he believed to be a bullet hitting and damaging the taxi’s window.

Hislop, 64, and the driver escaped were not harmed in the incident, which occurred on Dean Street. The area, just off of Oxford Street, is close to the Private Eye office.

Metropolitan Police have issued an update confirming there is not yet evidence of a gunshot. A Met spokesperson said: “While enquiries are ongoing, police have found no evidence of a firearms discharge at this time. Initial indications suggest a mechanical fault might have caused the window to shatter. We await further tests.”

Scotland Yard is investigating the suspected gunshot and it’s believed police are “keeping an open mind as to any motive”. Roads were closed around the scene, a popular tourist destination, as officers searched the area and CCTV will be examined.

Metropolitan Police previously said: “Police continue to investigate the circumstances around an incident in Soho on Tuesday morning. The driver of a London black taxi called police at around 10:10hrs and reported that he was stationary in traffic in Dean Street when a shot was fired towards his vehicle, striking the window and damaging it.”

“There were no reported injuries. An investigation was launched and police seized the vehicle. Urgent CCTV and forensic examinations have been conducted. While enquiries are ongoing, police have found no evidence of a firearms discharge at this time. Initial indications suggest a mechanical fault might have caused the window to shatter. We await further tests. Police have informed the driver and passenger.”

Hislop has been Private Eye editor since 1986. The iconic weekly political magazine is famed for its satirical pieces and investigations.

He has also been a regular panellist and team captain on the BBC’s comedy quiz show Have I Got News for You since 1990. He’s known for his razor-sharp quick wit on the programme, which pokes fun at the top stories of the week and often the government.
