I’m A Celeb’s Tony Bellew and Sam Thompson ‘not friends’ as star admits rivalry

Tony Bellew has joked that he and I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! bestie Sam Thompson are now “rivals” as they’ve both signed up for Soccer Aid.

The pair got close in the Aussie jungle last year, with their bromance charming viewers, but will go up against each other in the charity football match in June. Made In Chelsea star Sam is set to play for the England side, while Tony is in the World line-up.

Appearing on Good Morning Britain, the boxer quipped that the pair will be “frenemies” as they clash on the pitch. “Me and Sam are now going to become rivals,” he said.

“I gave him a call and said, ‘I think I am going to do Soccer Aid’ and he said, ‘I am going to love spending time with you, we are going to train together, I am going to get to shoot balls past you.’ Well, no you are not mate, because I’m on the other team!”

Tony is on the World team for the charity match

He went on: “I didn’t have a clue what team I was going to be on or what was going to happen, but now you know. So we are now rivals and no longer friends – we are frenemies.”

Tony is going to be in goal for the World side and seemed to fancy his chances. “I’ll be OK, I can use my feet and I am pretty good with my hands, to say the least,” he said. “So I am sure I’ll be OK.”

Sam and Tony were close in the jungle

But GMB host Susanna Reid asked what would happen if there was a penalty shoot out and he was up against Sam. “What is going to happen?” she asked. “You are going to crumble! It will be like your son trying to shoot a goal and you are there to stop it.”

“He is my fifth child, you are not wrong,” laughed the star. “I did take great care of him out in the jungle.”

Viewers loved the pair’s bromance

Tony said after I’m A Celeb he “handed (Sam) back to his adoptive father Pete Wicks”, who is another close friend of Sam’s. “I am going to have to have Pete chastise him before the game, put him in his place and tell him to behave himself!” he quipped.

Soccer Aid for UNICEF 2024 will take place on Sunday June 9 at Stamford Bridge, London.
