ITV Benidorm Madge star unrecognisable in stunning unearthed snaps from start of career

Benidorm legend Sheila Reid looks totally different in stunning snaps from the beginning of her career.

The actress, now 86, played the sharp-tongued and sun-worshipping grandma Madge Harvey on the beloved ITV show. The hit series debuted in 2007 and followed a group of Brits as they headed to the Solana Resort to soak up the sun.

For 11 years, the show was a ratings hit and bagged countless awards including BAFTAs and NTAs. However, in 2018, Benidorm was axed leaving fans of the show devastated.

Joining the series from the very start, Madge was introduced as the mother of Janice Harvey (Siobhan Finneran), mother-in-law to Mick (Steve Pemberton) and grandma to Chantelle and Michael.

Rarely seen without a cigarette, Madge became a fan favourite thanks to her feisty attitude. But for actress Sheila Reid, she was already an established star at the time.

She began acting in 1960 when she starred in the ITV anthology series Armchair Theatre. The actress also racked up some other TV credits in titles such as Tales Of Mystery and Love Story and BBC drama series Z Cars.

And in unearthed snaps from her modelling days, Sheila looks unrecognisable. In one photo from 1969, the actress looks exceptionally glamorous.

Posing for the camera, Sheila rocked honey-blonde curly hair and dark-winged eyeliner. A second, black-and-white photograph from 1970, shows Sheila sporting much longer and blonder hair.

In other Benidorm news, star Sherrie Hewson, who played Joyce Temple-Savage, has dropped a hint the show could be making a return – but with a twist.

Appearing on GMB on Tuesday (June 18) Sherrie was quizzed on whether fans can expect a Benidorm return. She said: “It’s absolutely huge on Netflix.”

Talking about the show’s longevity, the actress added: “Everybody in the world watches it now, and everyone stops me in the street and asks if it’s returning.”

She went on: “It would make a film. And you could bring in all the people who have been on Benidorm. I think it would be brilliant. So that’s what I’m up there for!”

Co-host Susanna Reid then said: “And you’ve spoken to the person who writes Benidorm haven’t you?” Sherrie said: “Yes, Derren Litten.

“I think he loved the idea. He’s a brilliant brilliant writer and I know he’d make the most wonderful film,” she replied.
