ITV Benidorm star left ‘bruised and battered’ after romance with ‘love rat’ toyboy

One Benidorm star thought she’d found the love of her life when she settled down with a man 20 years her junior – but he turned out to be a love rat.

Sherrie Hewson, who appeared in the ITV sitcom as Joyce Temple-Savage, settled down with a new man after finding her husband of 22 years, Ken Boyd, cheating on her. Ken soon left her for the other woman, leaving Sherrie feeling betrayed and vowing: “I want to do without men.”

But her resolution didn’t last, and the Coronation Street actress moved on with property developer Richard, 12 years her junior – who “made her feel like a teenager again”. In 2012, Sherrie told The Mirror how the pair met at a bar in Leeds while out with friends.

She said: “I feel like a teenager again. It’s lovely, fun and a huge compliment that he likes me. He’s not a huge soap follower but he recognised my face. He said: ‘I bet you drink champagne.’ I thought that was cheeky, so I said: ‘No, Newcastle Brown Ale, actually.’”

The pair enjoyed the same hobbies – horse riding, holidays and going to the theatre. Sherrie admitted: “I didn’t think there was any way he’d be interested in me. I thought he was too young and I was being silly. I was with a group of younger women and thought he fancied one of them.”

Things fizzled out with Richard but Sherrie already had her sights set on another toyboy – this time an ex-pat who was 20 years younger than her. She met Michael in Benidorm at a tapas restaurant while filming the sitcom – and things went downhill from there.

By 2013, Sherrie found out Michael was a “liar and a cheat”, admitting to the Daily Mail: “It’s been a tough few months. I feel battered and bruised, physically and emotionally.

“I thought I’d found a man I could fall in love with but he was a liar and a cheat. I’m not sure my disastrous love life can ever be mended.”

She revealed that the staff at the restaurant, at which she became a regular, started to act awkward around her, and she realised something wasn’t right. Sherrie said: “Sometimes when I stopped by, Michael wasn’t there. One of them would ring him and he’d come rushing over. I knew something was wrong, so one day I confronted him.

“He didn’t try to lie. He said he had a wife and two kids further along the coast but that he spent very little time there and they had grown apart. As soon as I heard ‘wife’, that was it. I’m not saying I’ve given up totally but it’s going to be a long time before anyone will convince me to try dating again.”
