James Corden and Ruth Jones reportedly turned down a major Netflix deal for the final ever episode of Gavin and Stacey.
On Friday (May 3), the co-creators announced that the highly anticipated series finale will finally hit the airwaves on BBC One on Christmas Day. But a new TV insider revealed to The Sun that the writers nearly jumped ship and sold the final ever episode to the major streaming giant, Netflix.
This would have opened the beloved British sitcom up to an international audience. But after much debate, the pair decided the final comedy instalment will be beamed across the whole nation instead.

The source revealed: “They held conversations with Netflix who threw everything at them to land what is seen as a gem of British comedy. James, Ruth and the team were effective offered a one-off deal. And were promised it would open the show up to a whole new international audience.
“Obviously it was tempting, but they felt Gavin and Stacey belonged to the BBC – and the nation, really. The optics wouldn’t have been great had they ‘sold out’ so they went with their hearts, not the cash.
“They’re happy the right decision has been made,” they concluded. The chat show host, 45, and the Welsh writer, 57, delighted fans yesterday when they gave fans a sneak preview inside the final episode, as they shared a selfie peering over the festive episode.
James, who plays Smithy, captioned the post: “Some news… It’s official!!! We have finished writing the last ever episode of Gavin & Stacey. See you on Christmas day, BBC One, love Ruth and James.”
More than 18million viewers tuned in for the 2019 Christmas special ended on a huge cliffhanger with Nessa finally proposing to Smithy, making it the most-watched TV comedy in a decade. The show, will see the return of many of their favourite characters including Matthew Horne as Gavin and Joanna Page as Stacey.
Fans up and down the country are desperate to learn his answer to Nessa’s question, which could see a heart-warming wedding in the festive special. Others begging to find out exactly what happened during Uncle Bryn and Jason’s mysterious fishing trip.
The famous trip has been a long-running, unresolved mystery within the show since it first aired in 2007. So far, fans have only been given a few clues as to what really happened.
The first clue was that the bizarre activity is legal in Wales and involves soup and potential nudity. Another clue given was that the act somehow “defies the laws of gravity” and only took place because the pair were cold.
Viewers will have to tune in to find out what will really happen in the final festive episode.
