Comedian Katherine Ryan has defended Oprah Winfrey’s decision to use weight management medication as she claims the world treats her better when she’s thin.
In a clip from her Telling Everybody Everything podcast, Katherine Ryan was asking fans what their thoughts were on celebrities using diabetes drug Ozempic to manage their weight. It comes after 70-year-old TV host Oprah admitted to People that she has added drug to her lifestyle changes and has a better handle on her weight fluctuations.
The revelation sparked a huge debate online around the use of the medication. However, Ryan claims to understand why celebrities are using them. The 40-year-old mum explained: “Ozempic is huge in Hollywood. We all know that. We’ve seen celebrities shrinking and shrinking, and nobody really admits to being on Ozempic.

“Oprah recently has come out, I think, very refreshingly, and been like, ‘yeah, I’m happy that there is a drug that is tested and available to help me manage my weight.’ Even though we live in a body positive society, people want to be thin. It is a shame.”
But personally, the Canadian comic claims she can understand why Los Angeles-based celebrities would turn to the drug as she claims the world treats her better when she is thinner despite huge strides in body positivity. “Looking back on the last two-and-a-half years from experience, the world responds to me a lot more favourably when I am thin,” she added.

“People tell me I look great when I am thin. I feel more confident in photoshoots when I’m thin. I enjoy being thin. I like fitting into my old clothes again. I get why celebrities are doing this. I get it because in their industry it’s all that much worse.”
However, fans remained divided over it as some took to the comments on TikTok in support of the drug, while others say it should only be used by diabetics as intended. One user said: “It has helped with cravings, constant thoughts about food and my PCOS symptoms. First time in 15 years I now have a regular period!”

Another wrote: “I’ve lost five and a half stone on Ozempic and it has changed my life!” A third commented: “Ozempic is needed and now practically unavailable for diabetics and they should be made the priority over rich self absorbed celebs.”
Meanwhile, a fourth argued: “People saying that Ozempic shouldn’t be used unless for diabetes, like meds aren’t used for more than one purpose…” Others argued that celebrities should disclose whether they are on weight loss medication if they are promoting any healthy eating or exercise regime as it could be misleading.
