Legendary radio presenter dubbed ‘true gentleman’ dies as friends pay tribute

Radio City DJ Johhny Kennedy has sadly passed away.

The well-known presenter was a familiar voice on Radio City but also on Dune FM, Wirral Radio, and River Radio. Sharing their respects, Dune Radio posted a statement.

They wrote: “Very sad news to hear that radio legend Johnny Kennedy has sadly passed away. Johnny not only worked with us from our launch day as Sandgrounder Radio in June 2016 for a few years but also when we ran the station on a temporary 28-day broadcast licence in 2015.

In addition to this, Billy Butler, who is also a veteran broadcaster honoured him. He wrote: “So sad to hear of the passing of Johnny Kennedy comedian, DJ, vocalist, opera singer, marathon runner, charity champion and devoted husband.

“Always great company. My deepest sympathy to Linda who was his rock. Love lives on.”

Anne Dalton who works at ABD Productions remembered Johnny fondly and said: “So sad to hear of the passing of Johnny Kennedy. He played the lead, Joe Wragg, in so many of the professional productions of “Her Benny” over the past thirty years. A lovely lyrical tenor, entertaining raconteur, consummate professional and true gentleman.

“We’ll treasure the magical performances from the man who inspired so many members of cast and made, with them, the countless, happy memories we all share. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. He will be sadly missed.”

Meanwhile John Martin shared his sadness and penned: “So sad to hear the news of the passing of former Radio City DJ Johnny Kennedy. I wrote in my book about how supportive he was when I was a young comic. I was on his radio show many times. He worked the clubs with my dad long before I came into the business. RIP Legendary JK.”

And Neil Newton wrote: “Really sad to hear of the passing of a great friend, mentor and my radio Dad – Johnny Kennedy. From answering the phones for JKJD at Radio City, to Dune FM, River Radio, Wirral Radio and Sandgrounder, we worked together since 1996. Rest in peace JK. Love you.”

As well as his radio show, Johnny was also a comedian, vocalist and keen fundraiser.
