Liam Payne was with two mystery women who left room just before he fell to death

Two mystery women were with Liam Payne the night before he died – and didn’t leave the hotel where he lost his life until the day of the tragedy.

Argentinian journalist Mercedes Ninci partially named the women on a national TV programme but we have decided not to share their identities.

The women are believed to have left the hotel before Liam was instantly killed after tumbling from a balcony. They have been referred to as “key witnesses” rather than suspects in local media reports.

Prosecutors have now confirmed they have questioned five witnesses – saying two were women and three were hotel workers.

They also said Liam suffered 25 different injuries after his tragic fall at the Hotel CasaSur Palermo.

In the lengthy statement they also confirmed they had taken away “several substances” from Liam’s room.

One part of the statement read: “Also, last night, at the headquarters of the National Prosecutor’s Office for Criminal and Correctional Matters No16, five testimonies were taken from three hotel workers and two women who, in the previous hours, had been with the musician in his room, but who had already left the hotel when the event occurred.”

It continued: “The prosecutor’s office pointed out that, as a matter of protocol, the circumstances of the case are being investigated as a ‘doubtful death’, although everything suggests that the musician was alone when the fall occurred, and was going through some kind of psychotic episode as a result of substance abuse.”

It added: “Minutes earlier the Hotel Casa Sur, located at 6000 Costa Rica Street in Palermo, requested help through the 911 emergency line for a guest who was under the influence of drugs and alcohol and had destroyed some objects in the room.”

They also said “no injuries were observed that would suggest the intervention of third parties.”

City police sources confirmed earlier this afternoon they had found clonazepam, a benzodiazepine used to control seizures or fits due to epilepsy as well panic attacks, during a search of the singer’s third-floor deluxe suite.

They also said they had taken away painkillers and “many traces” which would be analysed in a specialist forensic lab.

The well-placed city police source said: “What substances might have been in Liam Payne’s body is something that the autopsy will have to show.

“That information will be released by the prosecutors who are leading the investigation if they deem it appropriate.

“Prosecutors are taking statements from witnesses and hotel employees.

“But I can confirm that in the dead man’s hotel room clonazepam, painkillers and many substances were taken away and will be analysed in a forensic laboratory.

“A telephone and computer were also taken away.”
