Little Mix’s Jade Thirlwall ‘takes swipe at Simon Cowell’ in debut solo single

Little Mix star Jade Thirlwall has reportedly taken a public jab at music tycoon Simon Cowell in her debut solo single.

The 31-year-old singer is preparing to launch her new music following the group’s hiatus announcement in 2021. Jade, along with Leigh-Anne, Perrie Edwards and Jesy Nelson, rose to stardom as part of Little Mix after their formation on X Factor in 2011. The group later disbanded after Jesy’s exit in 2020.

During the recording of their fifth album LM5, the band switched from Simon Cowell’s label Syco to RCA following an alleged fallout with the mogul. Now, it’s reported that Jade’s first solo single, Angel Of My Dreams, alludes to this dispute.

The highly anticipated track includes the lyric: “Sold my soul to a Syco”, seemingly referencing Simon’s former record label, according to The Sun. The accompanying video is rumoured to portray a young Jade striving for fame, under the control of a cigar-smoking man who dominates the music industry, reports the Mirror.

The Sun also reports that Jade claimed in 2020 that Little Mix’s departure from Simon’s Syco label had negatively impacted the group. When questioned about the lack of female empowerment in their music videos, she responded: “We did a little bit but we had a switch of labels during the LM5 process and that really f***ed us over. It was harder to put all our creativity out there in the way we would have liked.”

Simon Cowell has previously clarified that he “never fell out” with Little Mix, attributing the friction to a dispute with the band’s management, Modest Management, over songwriting credits for their hit “Woman Like Me.” He praised the group as “the hardest working bunch” he’s ever collaborated with.

The Little Mix fandom was left reeling in December 2020 when Jesy Nelson announced her departure from the band. The remaining members Jade, Perrie, and Leigh-Anne sought therapy to cope with the aftermath, as Leigh-Anne revealed the exit led to a tumultuous period marked by fan feuds and rumours of internal conflict.

Leigh-Anne has opened up about the ordeal, confessing: “It was a complex and painful thing to come to terms with. We all felt it, that pain and sadness. The whole thing felt like a weird break-up, and I wasn’t prepared for it.”

In her heartfelt autobiography Believe, Leigh-Anne shared further insights: “I wasn’t prepared for the intensity of those emotions. The whole thing was abrupt and sad and then it was messy, which made it even more painful.”

A month prior to her departure, Jesy Nelson raised eyebrows when she withdrew from the live final of Little Mix: The Search on BBC. She pointed to mental health issues as the reason for her exit, sharing on Instagram: “The truth is recently being in the band has really taken a toll on my mental health. I find the constant pressure of being in a girl group and living up to expectations very hard. There comes a time in life when we need to reinvest in taking care of ourselves rather than focusing on making other people happy.”
