Loose Women legend breaks down as she admits ‘hardest thing’ on partner’s death

A Loose Women icon broke down in tears as she opened up on her partner’s death.

Jane McDonald joined the Loose Ladies on their ITV panel show once again as a guest after leaving the show behind in 2014. Since going solo, she has gone on to release a slew of albums, books and TV series, cementing her name as one the biggest entertainers in the country.

On Friday (September 6), Jane appeared on the show to celebrate its 25th birthday, joining Kaye Adams, Nadia Sawalha, Brenda Edwards and Linda Robson on the iconic panel desk. But while spirits were high and everyone celebrated, attention soon took a more subdued tone.

During their chat, Jane was asked how she was coping following the tragic death of her partner Eddie Rothe in 2021. The star, 61, sadly lost her Eddie to lung cancer during the course of the pandemic – he was just 67 years old.

Looking back on his life, it was obvious that Jane still felt pain about losing her partner, as she began to well up on the show. “If I could get my mother and Ed back, I would in a heartbeat, but I cant,” she admitted.

“You’ve got to realise that life goes on and I want to live – I love life,” she added. “We don’t know how many days we’ve got and Ed died very young.”

She finished: “I want to just do everything I want to do. I’m moving forward and taking them with me.”

Jane’s mum also passed away some years ago, eventually losing her life in December of 2018. But despite the pain she felt during the course of lockdown, Jane was able to focus her attention on Eddie, being by his side whenever he needed anything.

The pair were able to live out his final months together, which had been rare due to her busy schedule. Recalling her time in the pandemic, Jane confessed: “As daft as it sounds, I’m thankful it was during Covid because I was there with him; nobody else was.”

However, despite the intimacy of their time together, she confessed that this also was the “hardest thing” – as no doctors or nurses came to visit to check on his condition, leaving Jane to do it herself. After months being looked after at home, Eddie was then taken to Wakefield Hospice, where he sadly passed away.

At the time, Jane thanked the NHS staff who had helped her and Eddie through his illness, adding that the cancer was the eventual cause of his death. Since then, Jane has stayed strong and moved on with her career, and has insisted she is not looking for love again.

When asked on what was next for her, Jane said she was happy to do whatever the world had in store for her. “It’s a journey; all the things you thought you were going to do, but you have to make a new life,” she said.

“It’s like starting again and that’s frightening for anyone. But we all find our way.”
