As the Love Island finale wrapped up, crowning Mimii Ngulube and Josh Oyinsan as the ITV2 show’s champs, all eyes should’ve been on the lovebirds.
Yet, it was Maya Jama’s encounter with Stormzy’s mate Omar Nyame that set tongues wagging online. Rocking a stunning black number, host Maya sashayed over to audience member Omar.
Their chit-chat seemed chill at first glance, but fans spotted an “awkward” vibe. Just weeks after her split from Stormzy, their second breakup since rekindling the flame in Greece last August, it’s no shock Maya might’ve felt a tad uneasy bumping into his buddy.

But like the pro she is, the Love Island star playfully ribbed him about his racy Insta snaps. She quizzed: “There’s a lot of underwear situation going on, you’re naked on the gram quite often. Is that your new thirst trap technique?”
Omar clapped back: “Do you know what, at the end of the day my body’s good so I gotta show it.” And the crowd went wild dissecting their banter. One fan tweeted: “Ik that was awkward for Maya and Omar LOL.”
Another chimed in: “Not Maya talking to Omar her ex-boyfriend’s friend [laughter emoji].” A third fan piped up: “Do you think it’s awks between Omar and Maya?” While many felt the tension was tangible, others lauded Maya for her professionalism. One viewer wrote: “Omar and Maya acting like he’s not besties w/ her ex. true professionalism.”
On 17 July, the TV host revealed that her romance with Stormzy had come to an end, confessing they had spent the year attempting to “make it work.” The pair had been an item for five years before their initial split in 2019. Their breakup took fans by surprise, as just a week prior to the announcement, they had appeared united at The British Grand Prix, where Stormzy performed.
Moreover, during Glastonbury of that year, they seemed smitten and she had also shown support for his latest business venture, a bar in Soho. In August of the previous year, rumours reached fever pitch after they were seen together at All Points East festival in east London, over the bank holiday.
The next week, eagle-eyed fans noticed they had the same backdrop in their holiday photos, despite posting the snaps separately, while vacationing in Greece. However, it was when paparazzi snapped them hand in hand, that their reunion was unofficially confirmed.
In October of that year, Maya substantiated the rumours when she shared an Instagram story of the rapper picking her up from the airport post-Love Island filming. And the following month, they made a dazzling appearance together at British Vogue’s Forces for Change party.
