Marvel actress Connie Chiume has passed away at the age of 72.
The Black Panther star’s death has been confirmed by her family after she passed away on Tuesday (August 6) at a Johannesburg hospital. The multi-award-winning South African actress was admitted for a “medical procedure” before her death, according to Newzroom.
Chiume’s family released a statement on Instagram and said: “The Chiume Family regrets to inform you of the passing of the internationally acclaimed award-winning actress Connie Chiume. Connie Chiume, 72, passed on at Garden City Hospital today on 6 August 2024.

“The Family asks for privacy during this difficult period. The family will communicate further details.” Fans commented underneath the post, with one writing: “Deepest condolences to the family.
“Thank you for everything Ma.” A second added: “May she rest in peace.”
Her family have asked for privacy at this time and have vowed more details to follow. Connie starred in Black Panther as Mining Tribe Elder and its sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, playing Zawavari.
She also featured in Beyonce’s 2020 musical film Black is King. The actress has starred in numerous South African TV shows like Rhythm City, Zone 14 and Gomora.
At the time, Connie admitted to not realising how much Black Panther would blow up. Speaking to South Africa’s Sunday Times, the star said: “I went to an audition not knowing what I was auditioning for. I went there and I was given a piece that I was supposed to do.
“I could see that this person is an African who was addressing the nation. I wore my African regalia, I learnt my lines. I did my best.”
Connie was married from 1985 to 2004 and is reportedly survived by her four children, of which are two sons and two daughters.
