Mel B had ‘extreme’ electric brain therapy to combat suicidal thoughts after abusive marriage

Mel B has opened up about her experience of undergoing “extreme” electric brain therapy to cope with the trauma from her abusive marriage.

The singer, 48, revealed she flew to to the Balearic Islanders for electro cranial magnetic therapy to “rewire” the part of her brain affected by the abuse. The therapy “renewed and shocked” the neurons in her brain to combat the physical, emotional and financial abuse she endured during her marriage to Stephen Belafonte.

The noninvasive form of brain stimulation is believed to help patients deal with past trauma. Side effects can include pain, headaches and sometimes even seizures.

The Spice Girls star had the gruelling treatment nearly every day for six weeks. Speaking to The Sun on Sunday, Mel B said: “The machine would bang and brrr as magnetic waves shot into my head. It was intrusive.”

She ended up in “floods of tears” after she was forced to deal with terrifying flashbacks. It was a last resort for the star, who has tried a number of conventional talking therapies as well as hypnotherapy, tapping therapy and EMDR.

Although talking therapy didn’t work for her, the mum-of-three explained that there’s hope for those who have been through the same experiences she has, saying: “Now I can honestly say it worked for me – and I am going to have another treatment.”

Since filing from divorce from Hollywood movie producer Stephen, 48, in 2017, Mel has become an ambassador at domestic abuse charity Women’s Aid. She detailed the extent of the abuse she suffered at the hands of her ex in her autobiography Brutally Honest.

During the live shows of X Factor in 2014, Mel admitted she attempted to take her own life. She opened up about the pain of only seeing her 12-year-old daughter Madison during school breaks because of the custody rules with her ex.

After her difficult split, the US court decided Madi should live in the US with her dad, meaning Mel B can only visit her in the holidays. Talking to The Sun, Mel B shared how hard it is to be away from Madison: “It is like having an arm cut off.

“She is my baby. I have spent a fortune on legal battles but at least she spends big chunks of time here. In the eyes of the court, I’m the big earner and have to pay his court fees as well as my own.”
