Michael Palin laughs off Monty Python co-star John Cleese’s claim he is ‘boring’

Michael Palin has laughed off John Cleese’s claim that he’s “boring”, joking that he is going to “bask” in it.

Fawlty Towers star John recently made the comment about Michael during a chat on Zoe Ball’s BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show. Zoe had asked after John’s Monty Python co-stars, and he responded to say that Michael was “sweet, kind, slightly boring”.

Michael, 81, was quizzed about it during an appearance on ITV’s This Morning, and made it clear he wasn’t bothered. It was brought up by host Ben Shephard, who mentioned Michael’s new travel show that saw him visit Nigeria and said it was hardly a boring thing to do.

“Your old teammate from Monty Python, John Cleese, has put it out there that he thinks you are a boring old man!” he exclaimed. But Michael joked: “Oh well, John is scintillating, we all know that.”

“It’s in his passport,” he laughed, as Ben and his co-host Cat Deeley giggled. The star went on to explain that he was more than happy with the lane he was in. “I really enjoy playing boring characters,” he said. “I have done a few.”

Talking about his Python days, he told Ben and Cat: “I always played the boring character but John couldn’t have done without me. Someone selling the parrot, or someone in the argument sketch to sort of play off.

“So I think I am going to continue to bask in John’s compliment that I am boring. The more boring I can be the better!”

On Zoe’s show, John had been asked about a recent get together with his Python pals Michael and Terry Gilliam. He said they had a blast, sharing that the stars are “very silly” and “laugh a lot” when they are together.

He was also asked about TV star Michael, whose wife Helen – who he had been married to for 57 years – sadly passed away in 2023 after suffering kidney failure. “Michael is just the same, sweet, kind, slightly boring man,” John replied. He also quipped that Terry was “completely mad” but that the stars had “an absolutely lovely time”.

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV
