Molly-Mae and Tommy Fury’s split — expert reveals exactly why Gen Z can’t stay together

Molly-Mae and Tommy Fury have dramatically split after five years – and this relationship expert thinks they know why it was destined to fail.

That’s right, the ultimate Love Island power couple have called it quits after half a decade after Molly-Mae posted a very cryptic message to her 8million Instagram followers on Wednesday (14 August).

The now ex-couple, who are parents to one-year-old daughter Bambi, both released separate statements on their social media accounts leaving fans in cahoots.

So, we had a chat with a relationship expert in attempts to shed some light on the bombshell breakup that has shocked a generation to its core.

It turns out that Molly and Tommy’s separation is not a big surprise – as fellow Gen Z’ers are rejecting long-term relationships in their droves.

And for one of the ‘it’ couples of the generation, it doesn’t set good precedent for the rest of the youth of today.

Speaking exclusively to Daily Star about why Gen Z couples can’t stay together, relationship expert and psychotherapist Sarah Lee, explained: “I think one factor is the shift in ideas around what life will look like for people.

“Access to social media and intimate details of other people’s lives has meant that people don’t need to follow previous societal norms of getting married and settling down.

“They can see people that they can relate to having fun, going out, working remotely or going on holiday.

“Previous generations never had this much access to other people’s lives so there were fewer comparisons and fewer options that were considered acceptable.

“It’s also a lot easier to meet people on apps so there could be some paralysis around choosing the right person because having a lot of choice means people find it harder to choose.”

So, it looks like Gen Z have found themselves in a very unique position thanks to social media and the constant stream of comparison.

Instead of being happy and content with what one has, the online space has opened up a whole world of possibilities for potential relationships – and just life in general.

And the ease of options reportedly looks like it might have put the spanner in the works for Molly and Tommy’s ‘perfect’ on paper relationship.

It’s alleged that Molly Mae called it quits with Tommy after she uncovered that he ‘cheated’ on her ‘multiple times’ – though the boxer denied these claims and is ‘horrified’ by them.

Though it’s not yet confirmed if this is the reasoning of their breakup, cheating isn’t a new concept within a relationship.

However, relationship guru Sarah Lee says that ‘saving face’ is no longer the go-to.

The expert believes that Gen Z are more likely to recognise what a ‘healthy’ relationship is and will not just stay put for the sake of it – or just avoid being with another all together.

Sarah continued: “I think ideas of relationships are shifting, people are starting to become more aware of what a healthy relationship looks like and may be more willing to challenge bad behaviour.

“Or they might choose not to have a relationship at all which is far more acceptable now than it would have been previously.

“I think that there’s much more emphasis on the individual now than rather than doing what society expects; there’s no longer the same amount of shame attached to being single, divorced or not wanting a partner at all.

“Saving face’ is about not feeling shame and if more people are like you (not getting married), there’s less shame associated with doing that as well.”

Only 40 years ago, the average age of getting hitched was 23 – it’s now 31. While Molly and Tommy were engaged, it looks like the pair will no longer be walking down the aisle into an early marriage.

Although there is still much speculation about the exact ins and outs of Molly and Tommy’s break-up, it’s not odd for people of their age to call it quits and scrap the idea of ‘I do’.

It’s an emerging trend of Gen Z – a complete difference to Generation X and Baby Boomers.

Sarah Lee concluded: “I think that being an adult is a lot different today and people have different expectations.

“Whereas it was common to get married young in the 70’s and 80s, it’s less common now. People wait longer to marry, longer to have children and there’s less stigma around being divorced.

“So I think more options brings different choices and less pressure to stay together because it might be judged or restrict your future options.”
