A Coronation Street actress once worked at a “dodgy massage parlour” which got “kinky”.
Helen Lederer, who recently starred as Ken Barlow’s love interest Elspeth on the ITV soap, revealed one of her first-ever jobs before fame. The Absolutely Fabulous legend revealed it was “reckless”.
The 69-year-old star exclusively told Daily star: “When I was 20, I weirdly ended up as a masseur, and that does seem a bit of an odd choice. But when you’re young, you do things more recklessly, than obviously this age.

“And then I did get trained by someone. But I would say in those days, the line between dodgy and kinky was a bit blurred. And navigating your way through those times is very different from now.
“I navigated my escape luckily, but I would say it was close to the wind. When you do look back, you go ‘What on earth was I thinking?’ But I think I lived in a bit of an imaginary world a lot of the time.
“I was quite naive. I was brought up in the suburbs and I didn’t even know how to wash a sheet or boil an egg when I left school, so yeah, I learned fast.”
Helen, who recently played Ken Barlow’s love interest Elspeth in the ITV soap, talks further into her colourful past in her new memoir titled ‘I’m Not Bitter’. Talking about her new project, she added: “The book is very much seen through the eyes of someone who is young but in a different era. I look back and go ‘Oh, that was a bit close to the bone’.
“Somehow I get myself out of situations and try not to repeat them. So it’s kind of navigating one’s way. But also, even at school, I got myself into trouble. Not because I wanted to but just because I did.
“I’m a bit of a people pleaser, but I also like to break rules and make people laugh. So that combination didn’t go down that well and very strict all-girls school.”
