Neighbours Toadie star ‘couldn’t feel his leg’ after suffering major spine damage

Neighbours actor Ryan Moloney underwent a major spinal surgery.

The Toadie Rebecchi actor, known for his role in the Australian soap, had to undergo a four-hour procedure to address his crippling spine issues. Ryan, also recognized for his stint on Celebrity Big Brother, says he couldn’t feel his left leg.

“I was suffering from back pain, and I couldn’t feel my left leg for most of the time. It was completely numb because the discs in my back were disintegrating and getting progressively worse.”

Just 35-years-old at the time, Ryan had just achieved his commercial pilot’s license when he had to face this unexpected medical challenge. He told The Sun: “I knew they were going to cut me open and work on my spinal cord, and that was nerve-racking.”

During the operation, surgeons removed damaged discs and fused his spine with a metal rod. Fortunately, Ryan’s recovery went smoothly. “They got me walking again within a day, and thankfully, I made a great recovery,” he said.

“I can feel my leg again now, so that’s good.” However, he humorously added: “When I was playing Buttons in panto at Christmas, I wasn’t running around as much as I normally do!” Ryan recently spoke out about the moment he learned that Neighbours was returning.

The 43-year-old claimed it was “such a big shock” to find out the soap was returning to television just months after its final episode aired in July last year. “It was such a big shock. We all said goodbye to Neighbours and some of us had sold houses, moved away and our kids had changed school, so it was an absolutely unexpected pleasant shock,” he said.

“It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity. When else would something as big as this ever happen. So you have got to say yes and go along for the ride – and it’s been quite a ride so far.” The actor also said it’s been really “nice and enjoyable” working with several new cast members on the show.

Meanwhile, Ryan has also collaborated with Ring and created different Neighbours-themed doorbell replies. The pre-recorded responses can be enabled through the app to play when someone rings your Ring Video Doorbell.

“Not only can fans hear some of my one-of-a-kind phrases again on screen, they can also hear me through their Ring Video Doorbell with my latest Quick Replies. I’m very excited to be bringing my voice to more than just Ramsay Street but streets across Australia and New Zealand,’ Ryan added.

Neighbours streams on Amazon Freevee.
