Heartstopper fans have said they are “devastated” that Olivia Colman won’t be back in the third series.
The Crown actress plays Sarah Nelson, the supportive mum of Kit Connor’s Nick, who comes out to her in a moving scene in the first series. But she recently revealed that she wouldn’t be in the upcoming third run because of her busy schedule.
“I couldn’t do number three,” she told Forbes. “I couldn’t fit it in. I feel awful about that.”

The character was a favourite with Heartstopper fans so many have been upset by the news. “Why even watch Heartstopper season 3 if there’s not going to be any Olivia Colman,” one dismayed viewer posted on X, along with a crying emoji.
Another chimed in: “Actually devastated! Olivia was one of my favourite castings and brings such a gentle caring love to the role!”
“Honest I am devastated,” said someone else. “Olivia is my favourite actress, and to think she agreed to be a part of a show like Heartstopper makes me love her even more. She most definitely portrays the best mom of television as Sarah Nelson and this role has changed so many lives.”
Somebody else said they were “crying” over Olivia’s news. One fan suggested: “Can we not just get Olivia Colman in for like a day to do those Heartstopper scenes? Gutted is not the word.”
However, other fans pointed out that the show would go on without the Wonka actress, thanks to its strong cast and gripping story. “I love Olivia Colman and will miss her on Heartstopper, but unlike what several misleading articles I’ve seen say, she is not a ‘star’ of the show,” one said.
“She is a minor supporting character. Kit and Joe play the leads, with Yaz, Will, Tobie, Kizzy, Corry, and Rhea as major supporting.”
“Yes, it would be great to have Olivia back, but her’s is not the main story of Heartstopper,” agreed someone else. “She is a supporting mum to Nick & that is precisely her role, supporting cast. I’m not saying she’s not important, she absolutely is, but Heartstopper goes on, with or without her.”
