Hollyoaks bosses have “turned storylines on their heads” just months after taking over the Channel 4 soap.
Hannah Cheers and Angelo Abela were named as successors to Lucy Allan last year and are currently co-executive producing the show. Hannah worked on the programme from 2009 until 2021 and Angelo has previously directed several episodes and recent served as co-head of children’s and family shows at Lime Pictures.
Actor Matthrew James Bailey was recently a guest on the Soap From The Box podcast and spoke to host Lee Salisbury about a major change the new bosses made to an ongoing storyline involving his character Ethan Williams.

It was recently revealed that Dilly Harcourt (Emma Johnsey-Smith) was the sister of Sienna Blake (Anna Passey) in a jaw-dropping twist after months of her believing she was the sibling of her fiancée Rafe Harcourt (Chris Gordon). Rafe was in fact Dilly’s husband but when he told her to loved Sienna, she ended up accidentally killing him.
Ethan has since been trying to help Dilly flee Hollyoaks as police search for her to discuss Rafe’s death but actor Matthew says that Dilly wasn’t going to be Sienna’s sister and that the storyline is going down a completely different route to what was originally planned.
He explained: “Dilly being Sienna’s sister wasn’t even an option and then Hannah and Angelo have come in and absolutely turned it on its head which it should be. Audiences shouldn’t be expecting anything and there should be massive twists. In true Hollyoaks fashion, they came in and went ‘This is what we’re going to do with it’.
“The original storyline was Sienna would then run off and get the mansion and she would would go down a sort of a darker path and it was up to Ethan to save her. Dilly was a kind of footnote in the storyline, however, Hannah and Angela came in and sat us all down and told us the new storyline about Rafe and Dilly being husband and wife and Dilly being Sienna’s sister and I remember my jaw being on the floor.
“It’s phenomenal and exciting because it changes the whole dynamic of the acting. It changes how you go about a scene and it became really fresh, really new and really exciting. It’s great and they’ve done it so well. I don’t think audiences were expecting it at all.” Matthew has played Ethan Williams since 2021 and teased that there’s plenty more to come for his character in the near future.
Hollyoaks airs weeknights on E4 at 7pm followed by first-look episodes on Channel 4 streaming at 7.30pm and Soap From The Box is available here
