Once Upon a Time star Chris Gauthier dies ‘suddenly’ aged 48 as co-stars ‘heartbroken’

Once Upon a Time and Supernatural star Chris Gauthier has sadly died aged just 48.

The actor’s sudden death was confirmed by the actor’s talent agency TriStar Appearances/Event Horizon Talent in a heartbreaking statement. They wrote: “We can confirm that our dear friend and client, Chris Gauthier, passed away on Friday morning, February 23, at the age of 48.

“As a beloved Vancouver-based character actor, Chris shared his talents with so many of us both on television and in film. His loss is felt not just by his fans but by those of us who were lucky enough to know him more personally.”

The statement added: “On behalf of his family, we do ask for privacy during this time so that they are able to grieve properly.” Gauthier’s manager explained he “passed suddenly and unexpectedly following a short illness”.

The late actor is famed for playing William Smee in ABC’s fantasy drama show Once Upon a Time, having appeared in several episodes between 2012 and 2018. His character is a member of Hook’s crew on the Jolly Roger.

Fans and friends of Chris shared moving tributes to the actor online following the shocking news. Colin O’Donoghue, who played Captain Killian ‘Hook’ Jones on Once Upon a Time – admitted he was “heartbroken” in a tribute on Instagram.

He wrote: “Rest in Peace, Chris! Heartbroken! My love and thoughts go out to Erin and the boys. You will be missed brother. You were the real captain.”

A fan wrote on X: “Aw man, [Chris] was one of those guys who felt like he was in pretty much everything I watched in the mid-2000s into the 2010s. RIP.” Another commented: “RIP […] A fine character actor who at one point seemed to pop up in several things I was watching in a row.”
