A film adaptation hailed as one of the ‘scariest and most intelligent’ films by viewers, is now available for free streaming – but only for a limited period.
Originally an Olivier-nominated London stage play before its 2017 big screen debut, Ghost Stories is a British horror film currently available on BBC iPlayer, but not for much longer.
Despite being recently added to the streaming platform, it’s stated at the time of writing that it will only be viewable for the next 25 days, suggesting that it will be removed shortly after Halloween.
The film was penned by League of Gentlemen member Jeremy Dyson and Derren Brown collaborator Andy Nyman.
Nyman also takes the lead role, joined by Martin Freeman, Paul Whitehouse, Alex Lawther, and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, reports the Mirror.
The storyline revolves around Phillip Goodman (portrayed by Nyman), a psychology professor, staunch sceptic and solo ‘belief buster’, who finds his convictions challenged when he receives a seemingly posthumous letter with an unusual task.
His mentor Charles Cameron, a TV parapsychologist, disappeared fifteen years ago and is assumed dead, but writes to Goodman insisting they must meet.
It appears Cameron is still alive and requires Goodman to provide a logical explanation for three stories too strange or horrifying to be real.
As Goodman delves deeper, he encounters three tormented individuals, each with a story more terrifying, eerie and inexplicable than the last.
One fan was left thoroughly impressed after stumbling upon the film on the BBC, taking to X, formerly Twitter, to rave: “Just watched the best horror film I’ve ever seen. It’s the scariest and easily the most intelligent horror film ever. Honestly, if you watch until the end, it will absolutely blow your mind!”
They weren’t the only one singing the film’s praises, as another enthusiast shared their thoughts online, describing it as intense and unpredictable.
The fan commented: “Intense film – great plot, real knuckle biting moments of fear. Refreshingly difficult to predict and while it didn’t have a huge cast it felt like every actor had their part written especially for them.” (sic)
A third viewer chimed in, stating: “My partner isn’t easily scared and they found parts of the film scary, so you know it’s good. I spent 3/4 of the film behind my hands! If you are scared of the dark like me -the you will be terrified! Interesting twist to the end! found this film exceptional, well shot, well scripted!” (sic)
Ghost Stories is available to stream on BBC iPlayer until November 3.
