Only Fools fans say ‘penny has dropped’ as they learn meaning of classic scene

Only Fools And Horses Fans have confessed the “penny dropped” on some jokes years after they first aired.

The classic show ran from 1981 until 1991 before returning for a handful of Christmas specials. And it seems some people are still only just realising what some jokes actually mean.

Over on Reddit’s Only Fools And Horses community, users were posed with the question: “Were there any jokes you didn’t understand the first time watching?” And it turns out there were many.

In the scene, taken from Series 6 Episode 4 The Unlucky Winner Is… sees Rodney (Nicholas Lyndhurst) talking to Del Boy (David Jason) about his blossoming romance. But young Rodney is worried about getting Cassandra pregnant.

In the scene, Rodney picks up a magazine and shows a page to Del before closing it quickly. Del Boy tells him: “Look bruv, you don’t have to worry, they’re not really that size in real life.”

Rodney then explains in a roundabout way that he is too embarrassed to go and buy condoms himself. “There’s a sort of stigma attached to ’em,” he says.

Del Boy replied: “No, that’s just a piece of silver foil. You chuck that away.”

Then with a surprisingly educational moment, Rodney says: “In this day of AIDS and all the warnings on the telly and in the press and all that, people are still embarrassed to go and buy ’em. I mean, me, I seem to think that it’s only seedy little blokes do it.”

Del Boy refuses to go and buy them for him. But he tells him he can buy them from loads of different shops.

Reddit user u/LikeEveryoneSheKnows said: “I watched that when I was about 10 and it was years before the penny dropped! Oh! Condoms! Yes I was very sheltered.”

u/Disco_Benny joked: “I hope you know by now that they’re not that big in real life!” The original poster replied: “And I know by now that there is no stigma. It’s just a bit of silver foil, you chuck that away!”
