Paul McCartney announces UK arena tour but sparks outrage after major city snub

Sir Paul McCartney has announced his first UK arena gigs in six years, sparking outrage among fans due to a monumental snub.

The Beatles legend sent the Glastonbury Pyramid Stage crowd into a frenzy during his headline performance in 2022, but he hasn’t taken to a regular arena since 2018. His last ticketed event saw him storm through a whopping 40 hits at London’s O2.

Macca will return to the venue in December, where he will play two shows after gracing the stage at the stage at Manchester’s Co-Op Live. But some fans aren’t pleased with the 82-year-old icon for overlooking his birthplace, Liverpool.

His Got Back tour will see Sir Paul visit Manchester on December 14 and 15 and then London on December 18 and 19. However, Merseyside’s natives are left questioning why their local hero won’t be performing in Liverpool.

One outraged Twitter user likened the absence of a Liverpool show to a “kick in the plums” after witnessing Taylor Swift’s triple sellout at Anfield, stadium of Liverpool F. C. Another user wrote: “After the feel good factor of the Taylor Swift gigs this feels like a massive kick in the plums for Liverpool and its live music reputation.”

A third raged: “WOW! So Liverpool continues to build on the legacy of The Beatles and one of the bands biggest stars chooses Manchester over his home city? ! WHAT A JOKE!”.

Plenty of touring artists have headed to their home towns recently, with Sam Fender smashing it out of the park at Newcastle United’s St. James’ Park for two belting nights. Pulp’s comeback tour had them rocking festivals worldwide before returning to their roots with two packed-out gigs at Sheffield’s Utilita Arena.

And while the news may have caused outrage, some fans are giddy at the prospect of ticking off a “bucket list” concert. Wings soared after The Beatles, especially with their hit album ‘Band on the Run’, and now fans are buzzing.

One overjoyed fan declared it “the best day of my life,” while another vowed they “have to be there”.
