Will Young has revealed he is “really enthused” at the prospect of taking his career in an entirely new direction.
The 45-year old rose to fame as the first winner of Pop Idol in 2002 – pipping Gareth Gates to the crown in a dramatic final on ITV. After a string of hit records, Will went to star as an actor on both the stage and screen, most notably in the film Mrs Henderson presents, and the TV series, Bedlam.
Now the talented star harbours hopes of a dramatic new role, after explaining he’s considered the idea of representing his local constituency in parliament. Will has been openly critical of the Conservative government in recent years, even admitting their years in power had made him feel “terrified” to be a gay man in Britain.

Will says 2024 has made him feel “more hopeful”, however, in light of the Labour party’s resurgence in the opinion polls ahead of a General Election later this year.
“I had a moment yesterday or the day before and I was like, I might become an MP,” he told The Pod Save the UK podcast. “Honestly, I had a moment – my God, I could become an MP.”
He continued, joking: “I’m going to text old K-dog [Labour leader, Keir Starmer]. This isn’t a sales pitch for Labour, but I genuinely do feel hope when I’m around the people in Labour, when I talk to them, the meetings I’ve had with them.”
Will outlined more of his political opinion and expertise to host Liz Bates, adding: “I get a lot of hope from Labour, like Steve Reed, who’s shadow Defra [shadow Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, who has overall responsibility for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs]. I mean, he’s brilliant. They’ve just announced the fox hunting thing, they did the badgers, and they’re really hopeful.”
Taking a more relaxed turn, Liz asked how he’d cope in the job, to which Will replied: “The d**k pics would get me sent out within a day. Let’s be honest – I probably wouldn’t last long!”

Will added that should he be elected he’d be “all in”. He explinaed: “I’d go in for the cabinet. I’d quite like Defra because it’s a massive brief. I’m a country boy, so I’d quite like that.”
Despite being in the music business for two decades, Will told The Guardian lastyear that although he loves performing, he “doesn’t love” the industry side of operations, saying that “after all this time I still don’t know if it works for me.” He added: “And I don’t like the vulnerability of writing songs, releasing them and the result being judged. I never have. Even if they prove successful.”
