Richard Madeley pulls out of Good Morning Britain at last minute as he falls ill

Good Morning Britain suffered a major presenter shakeup moments before going live on air.

During Tuesday’s visit (August 20) to the ITV studios, Kate Garraway woke up the nation with the biggest news stories hitting the headlines. But fans were surprised by the familiar face who co-hosted the morning show.

Usually the 57-year-old hosts the show with her colleague Richard Madeley, but the 68-year-old was noticeably missing. Thankfully, broadcaster Sean Fletcher stepped in for the TV presenter at the last minute.

As the show opened, Garraway promptly updated viewers on the situation. She began: “Good Morning! Now if you were expecting to see Richard Madeley here, I think Richard Madeley was expecting to be here as well!

“He’s feeling a bit poorly this morning, so we’ve got lovely Sean, which is fantastic.” The doting mum-of-two asked how late Sean discovered he’d be stepping into Madeley’s shoes.

It was at this point that Fletcher recalled his sudden call to action in the early hours of the morning. He confessed: “So we wish Richard all the best, I get up in the morning and I log into the running order at home.

“I see my initial by all the stories that you would already have. Then I saw my initial on every other story. I thought there’s a mistake, there’s a typo!”

The realisation soon dawned on Sean after he took a closer look at the schedule and noticed a slew of missed calls from his colleagues. Sean joked: “Suddenly, I realised I had seven missed calls and I realised that something was up.”

Despite the sudden change of plans, he expressed his enjoyment hosting GMB compared to his smaller role presenting packages to camera. In good spirits, Garraway added: “As you say, we wish Richard all the best.

“Hopefully, he’ll be feeling better later today.” Adding to the light-hearted atmosphere, the blonde beauty revealed to viewers that before the show, there was a hilarious concern amongst the producers about whether Sean had brought a tie to wear for the programme.

Chuckling to himself, he said: “Yes, they put a tie on me and it was strobing! So literally as we were reading the headlines here, I’m changing my tie.” And it appears as though viewers loved Sean’s support on the show.

Taking to X – formerly known as Twitter – fans showered the star with praise online. One user penned: “At least, @SeanFletcherTV is in the hot seat. Llongyfarchiadu Sean. I’ve been saying for ages to give you a chance in the main presenter’s seat.”

Another agreed: “Great to see @SeanFletcherTV presenting today, he should definitely have more anchor slots and works well with @kategarraway.” A third chimed in with: “Wonderful to see @SeanFletcherTV love him alongside @kategarraway now I hope they may continue.”
