Richard Madeley has floored fans by revealing his “real accent” live on This Morning.
The 68-year-old television presenter appeared on the ITV daytime show on Wednesday (May 15) to chat to hosts Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley about his new book, Father’s Day, which is due to hit the shelves next week.
Returning from an advert, Richard sat next to Cat to welcome viewers back to the show before he was jokingly told to move from the hot seat by Ben.

After opening up about whay readers can expect from his book, conversation turned to Richard’s Essex roots and he began talking how he used to speak before he was forced to turn it down his accent by his very strict father and fans watching at home couldn’t believe their ears.
Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, one fan penned: “Omg buckled at Richard’s Essex accent . There’s no way that is his natural accent , big fibber.” Another added: “Yes Richard, we believe you” alongside a GIF of Pinocchio with his nose growing. A third person said: “Essex and East London accent are no where near the same just for clarification.” A fourth social media user said: “Richard Madeley pretending he used to talk like a geezer.”
It’s not the first time Richard has opened up about his real speaking voice. During a debate on Good Morning Britain about if accents can affect your chances of getting a job, Richard left his co-host Susanna Reid gobsmacked as he chatted in his old voice.
He explained: “I upgraded mine because my dad was a public school educated guy and at home in Romford, if I spoke like I spoke in the playground – honestly this is how I spoke- Dad would give me a clip around the ear and say don’t drop your h’s. So it was parental pressure.”
Richard was born in Romford and went to school in Brentwood, which are both filming locations for ITVBE reality show The Only Way Is Essex. He has previously revealed that his dad Christopher was physically abusive towards him as a child and his mother had to call the police on one occasion to make it stop.
This Morning airs weekdays on ITV1 and ITVX at 10am
