Rob Brydon has weighed in on recent rumours that a Gavin and Stacey reboot is in the works.
The beloved actor, who played Uncle Bryn in the hit BBC comedy, responded to reports this week that stars of the show, like writers James Corden and Ruth Jones, were revving up for a reboot after the Christmas special in 2019. Fans dying for more episodes have been whipped into a frenzy.
Speaking to BBC Radio 4 on Saturday (February 17), Rob said that many fans keep asking about a possible return of the show. Denying the rumours, he said: “I get asked about this on every interview I ever do.

“I sound like a politician, as far as I’m aware it’s another rumour. I don’t know. I mean, I’d love it if it were true.”
It’s been reported that a new Christmas special was in the works, leaving everyone eager to see what happens next, since the previous episode ended five years ago. Ruth Jones, who co-created the show with James Corden, denied the rumours earlier this week.
Speaking with RTE Radio 1 on Wednesday, she claimed it was “sadly a rumour”. The actress speculates this gossip began when she was seen having lunch with Corden upon his recent return to the UK from America.
Deadline reported that the new special was being made right now and that Steve Coogan’s company, Ruth Jones’s company, and one owned by James Corden would be making it.
The sitcom followed the lives of Gavin and Stacey, played by Mathew Horne and Joanna Page who played a young couple caught in a long-distance relationship between Essex and Wales.
The show ran for three series from 2007 to 2010. It came back in 2019 for a Christmas special that continued where the last episode left off. Smithy, played by James Corden, and Nessa, played by Ruth Jones, had a rocky relationship during the show.
But The last special ended with a surprise when Nessa asked Smithy to marry her. The 2019 Christmas episode bagged the highest overnight Christmas ratings in 12 years, with an average of 11.6 million people watching – making it the most-watched Christmas special since Christmas Day 2008.
By the time New Year rolled around, 17.1 million people had watched the episode. This made it the most popular scripted programme of the decade at that time. The special also won the impact award at the National Television Awards in 2020.
