Ryan Gosling insisted on adding ‘hidden meaning’ into Oscars performance

Every detail of Ryan Gosling’s iconic Oscars performance was planned down to the second.

It was a homage to Marilyn Monroe’s famous Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend scene from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and in the film, Marilyn wears a slinky pink dress and sings on a set of stairs while surrounded by men in black suits.

Ryan’s choreographer Mandy Moore opened up about the minds behind the tribute and explained: “That’s where the pink suit and everybody else in black came from, and the stairs in the back, and we had an homage to the candelabra girls. We had Ken-delabra men!”

It’s clear Ryan was at the forefront of putting together his piece and Moore said he was “pretty clear about his overall structure” expectations. Mandy revealed he “wanted to start in the audience” before walking up to the stage and “igniting the Ken-delabras” before joining “the dejected Kens on the stairs”.

She continued: “From there, he wanted the rest of the number to evolve as if Kens were coming from everywhere. ‘Calling All Kens,’ eventually ending in a huge celebration revealing Slash.”

Gerwig wanted the audience to stand up and join in while singing and dancing, so event organisers made sure to stream the lyrics on the big screens beside the stage. Gosling was also adamant he wanted his female co-stars involved and Mandy said: “It was really important for him to jump down and include Margot [Robbie], Greta and America [Ferrera]. He said: ‘I really need those ladies in the front, because I’m gonna go over to them. I want them to sing’.”

According to his choreographer, Gosling planned every second down to the tiny details to ensure that his legendary performance went smoothly. Reports have revealed that it was the actor’s idea to use a 40 piece orchestra, four famous Ken cameos and 24 massive Barbie heads to provide viewers with a show-stopping experience that even involved rock musician Slash from Guns N Roses.

Oscars producer Molly McNearney said: “Ryan Gosling is a true professional, that man. We met with him on Zoom months ago talking about the performance. Greta Gerwig weighed in creatively as well. He was so committed to it, his choreographer, Mandy Moore, is exceptional. She was on all the calls, so was Mark Ronson.”
