Ryan Gosling performed oral sex scene ‘so realistic’ it landed star ‘in trouble’

Ryan Gosling has confessed that he got into trouble for his sex scene with Blue Valentine co-star Michelle Williams.

Gosling and Williams portrayed such a “real” scene – specifically the infamous oral sex moment – that they landed Blue Valentine a classification battle across the pond. Ryan said: “The sex felt real, it wasn’t sexy or ‘a sex scene,’ and that’s why we got in trouble.”

He admitted that the reason why it looked “so real” was because the pair did such a “good job” during filming. Gosling quipped: “You shouldn’t be penalised for doing a good job.”

Back in 2010, Gosling’s “realistic” clip ruffled a few feathers but Ryan branded the film an “anti-romance”. He told The Guardian: “Director Derek Cianfrance wanted this movie to celebrate people’s faults, to demystify romance and to make something that felt real. I was excited by that.”

Eventually, the film’s rating was brought down to an R, which means anyone “under 17 needs a parent or adult guardian present”. The classification calls for parents to “learn more about the film before taking their young children with them” as the movie “contains some adult material”.

Despite the high rating, Blue Valentine was nominated for a whole host of awards after it was released back in 2010. Ryan and Michelle were both nominated at the Golden Globes for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama.

Throughout Blue Valentine, Cindy and Dean navigate their dysfunctional marriage while trying to raise their daughter and reignite the spark they once had. Williams first received the film’s script back in 2002 and Gosling committed to the role four years after, but the pair didn’t begin filming until 2009 due to lack of funding.

Michelle’s ex-partner Heather Ledger died a year prior to filming, so the director kept filming close to Brooklyn to take care of the pair’s daughter Matilda. Throughout filming, Ryan and Michelle improvised some of the script including the scene during which their characters wander through New York.

Ryan wrote and performed some of the film’s songs himself.
