Gogglebox’s George Gilbey, 40, tragically died in a workplace accident, leaving fans and co-stars heartbroken.

The Gogglebox and Celebrity Big Brother star sadly lost his life at the scene of the incident in Shoebury, Southend-on-Sea. Essex Police shared a statement on Wednesday, saying: “We received a report of an incident at Campfield Road in Shoebury at around 10am this morning (27 March), during which a man who was working at height had fallen and sustained an injury.

“The ambulance service including air ambulance were in attendance. Sadly, the man died at the scene.

“We will continue liaising with partners including the Heath and Safety Executive. A cordon remains in place at the scene.”

The tragic event reportedly happened at EGL Homecare. Heartbreaking photos from the scene show a large blue cherry picker leading up to the roof of the 35ft building.

Scaffolding poles and other building materials can be seen on the roof and two police cars are visible at the scene where George tragically lost his life. After the sad news of George’s passing, many tributes have poured in for the star of the Channel 4 show.

He was known for his appearances alongside his mum Linda and stepdad Pete, reports the Mirror. It’s believed that George’s pals gathered at a pub in Clacton-on-Sea to remember him. His mum Linda is reportedly “in bits” after hearing about her son’s death.

In 2021, George’s stepdad and Linda’s husband Pete passed away suddenly at the age of 71. This happened just days after he was told he had six months to live due to bowel cancer.

Linda shared that her son was deeply affected by this. On Wednesday night, Gogglebox also posted a tribute to George on social media.

They said: “George was part of the Gogglebox family for eight series alongside his mum Linda and step-dad Pete. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Linda, and George’s family and friends at this very sad time. The family have asked for privacy.”

Ricci Guarnaccio, a former star of Geordie Shore, was one of the first to pay tribute to George. He shared a series of photos on social media. On Twitter, he wrote: “Breaks my [heart] but @georgegilbey you are well and truly going to be missed my friend.

“Always lit up the room, cared for others and the memories we made I’ll cherish forever brother. From CBB to speaking to you last week, I’m going to hugely miss you ma boiii! Love you G.”

Just before he passed away, George put up a happy photo on his social media. He shared a snap with a big smile and said: “Done. Full membership,” showing off a gym card.

In the picture, he was wearing a cosy black hoodie and looked like he had been working out. George was famous for sitting on the Gogglebox sofa with his mum and step-dad. They were a hit with fans when they joined the show in its second series in 2013.

The Essex family left the show in 2014 because George went into the Celebrity Big Brother house and got to the final. In 2016, George came back to Gogglebox with Linda and Pete McGarry, which made lots of telly watchers really happy.
