Sheridan Smith ‘falling over drunk in street’ in new scene as she returns to stage

Sheridan Smith has been spotted ‘falling over drunk in the street’ as she gets to grips with her new stage role in London.

The talented 42-year old, who rose to fame on sitcoms The Royle Family and Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps is starring in the lead role in Opening Night – a live West End production based on the 1977 film of the same name.

It follows Sheridan as Myrtle Gordon – a middle-aged Broadway icon who suffers a nervous breakdown after witnessing the death of one of her fans. Every night in the production a dramatic scene is filmed outside the show’s Gieguld Theatre home that sees the actress puffing on a cigarette as she props herself up against a wall.

Sheridan then stumbles to the cobbled street as her co-stars rush to support her before ushering back inside through the stage doors. The scene is beamed back into the theatre of course, so those in attendance don’t miss any of the action.

Discussing the role with MailOnline earlier this week, Sheridan explained: “It feels like a moment of taking back control. I feel like the part is a gift, it’s a gift of a part for any actress to play and I’m loving every minute of it, it’s such an honour. I can’t wait for people to see it now.”

Sheridan took to Instagram on Sunday, meanwhile to share a snap of her three-year old son Billy outside the venue alongside her pal and former Emmerdale star, Charley Webb. Writing in response, one follower who had attended the show gushed: “Exceptional performance as always, what a show! Booking up to go again.”

Another penned: “Most versatile talented actor in the UK.” And a third wrote: “Billy is gorgeous @sheridansmithster love the excitement on his face that his Mamma is there on the wall.”

In a joint post shared by both Sheridan and the production’s account on Instagram last month, the Olivier Award winner could be seen excitedly sitting in a salon chair as she bid farewell to her trademark tresses. They captioned the post: “Watch our GLORIOUS leading lady transform into Myrtle for #openingnightmusical.”

In the clip, Sheridan explained: “I’m in the hairdressers. This is the last time you are gonna see blonde hair for a long time. I’m about to transform. Ah, excited!” The clip opened with her dragging her fingers through her blonde hair before the hair stylist started dying her hair brunette.

After washing out the dye, the star styled her tresses into loose beachy waves, prompting scores of fans to express their delight at her new image.
