Strictly’s Giovanni Pernice ‘probed’ over complaints by three former contestants

The BBC has initiated an internal investigation into Strictly star Giovanni Pernice following legal instructions from three former contestants.

The corporation is currently gathering evidence in response to the serious allegations that were previously made by celebs who appeared on the show. The formal complaints, lodged separately but by the same prestigious law firm, Carter Ruck, emerged after The Sun reported that the Sicilian dancer had left the popular dance competition.

While the identities of the three complainants have not been disclosed, they are believed to include Amanda Abbington. In addition to this, two other high-profile stars are also a part of the report.

A representative from Carter Ruck, which charges £700 per hour, stated: “There have been numerous serious complaints made to the BBC who are now in the process of evidence gathering. As it is still an ongoing matter no further comment can be made at this stage.”

The investigation, focusing on severe workplace misconduct, is expected to review rehearsal footage featuring Amanda and 33- year-old Gio. An insider told The Sun: “These are troubled times for the BBC – this is a nightmare situation, frankly.

“Rumblings have been going on for months about allegations surrounding his behaviour but they steadfastly declined to launch any kind of investigation. It was only when three contestants, all allegedly deeply traumatised and upset by some of his training methods and behaviour, complained that any action was taken.”

Meanwhile, Giovanni is currently on holiday abroad as the proceedings continue. The concerns arrive following a series of incidents regarding Giovanni’s “taskmaster” behaviour on set, which has resulted in past celebrities including Amanda getting teary-eyed.

Last year, Amanda left the BBC competition early on medical grounds. Amanda shared an emotional on Instagram at the time.

Parts of her statement read: “It is with deepest regret that I had to leave Strictly. I did not come to this decision easily or lightly but for personal reasons I am unable to continue.

“It was an absolute joy working with my fellow contestants, they are a beautiful, hardworking and talented group of people who I love and who I will miss seeing every Friday and Saturday and competing alongside. I want to thank the incredible Production team and everyone on Strictly who looked after me and who are so kind and caring. It’s a wonderful bunch of people and I’ll miss all of them.”

Having joined Strictly in 2015, Giovanni quickly became popular amongst fans. He reached the final with actress Georgia May Foote during his debut year and clinched the title in 2021 with EastEnders star Rose Ayling-Ellis.

Daily Star has contacted Giovanni’s representatives for comment.
