Tearful Only Fools fans agree on ‘one good thing’ from show’s ‘saddest scene’

Only Fools and Horses fans are devastated by the “saddest” scene of the series.

In Strained Relations, season four episode two, the characters all attend Grandad’s funeral and meet Uncle Albert – which fans have said is the “only good thing” to come from the iconic actors death.

Over on Reddit, someone posted a screenshot from the episode showing Del Boy sitting with his head in one hand and the other resting on the green armchair. In the caption they wrote: “This scene was one of the saddest of the series.”

Fellow Only Fools and Horses fans flocked to the comments where they shared their thoughts on the heartbreaking moment. One person said: “The speech Del makes never fails to [elicit] a tear from me. ‘Bloody family! I’ve finished with them! What do they do to you, eh? They hold you back, drag you down…and then they break your bloody heart’.”

Others praised writer John Sullivan’s ideas in the memorable scene, with one person saying: “John Sullivan was a genius. Added some comedy moments in sad episodes such as Grandad’s death and Cassandra’s miscarriage.”

Another comment read: “John Sullivan was such a genius writer, the Vicar’s hat scene was just pure class and classic OFAH,” while one fan added: “Honouring Grandad as a character in this episode was such a beautiful move by John Sullivan. Great performances by everyone as they were channelling [the] real grief they had for Lennard Pearce.”

Pearce was best known for his character in the BBC series, which he played from 1981 until his sad death in 1984. He suffered a heart attack on 12 December and was taken to hospital but after he was discharged, Lennard suffered a second heart attack and died on 15 December.

Episodes of Only Fools and Horses were rewritten around Grandad’s death and Uncle Albert was later introduced as Grandad’s long-lost younger brother. One person on Reddit noted Albert joining the OFAH cast and praised the character with: “Only good thing to come of [Grandad’s death] was Uncle Albert.”

Buster Merryfield played Grandad’s sibling Uncle Albert

Albert was played by Buster Merryfield for 37 episodes from 1985 and was known for his hilarious catchphrase: “During the war…,” which later inspired the title for Merryfield’s autobiography During the War and Other Encounters.

Buster died on 23 June 1999 as a result of a brain tumour. He was survived by his wife Iris, who later died in 2002 and was buried next to her husband.
