The Chase player opens up on dramatic career U-turn as he lands role on Downtown Abbey

This Chase contestant has revealed he started drama school at 50 and has since landed himself a role in Downton Abbey.

Ten years ago, Andrew from York decided it was time to quit the monotony of his 9-5 in search of pastures new, proving that you’re never too old to follow your dreams.

Having excelled in stand-up comedy as a youngster, the talented performer knew in his heart that he had the minerals to make it in show business.

Taking his future into his own hands, he took the plunge, heading to drama school, where he quickly excelled past his peers. And it didn’t take long for Andrew to start catching the eye of producers, with the go-getter cast in an episode of Downtown Abbey.

Impressed with his rapid development and positive attitude, Bradley Walsh asked: “Are you enjoying it?” This prompted an elated Andrew to reply: “Loving it.”

Probing further, the host questioned: “More importantly, are you making a living out of it?” Remaining mysterious, the contestant responded: “Just about,” resulting in a smile from Bradley, who beamed: “Good for you.”

However, if Andrew’s acting talents weren’t enough to earn the respect of the audience, it turned out that the 60-year-old has even more bows to his arrow than first thought.

When asked what he wanted to do with the money, Andrew revealed: “My hobby is metal detecting. I’ve done a lot of writing about it, and I’ve got a fan in Australia who’s invited me out to do some gold prospecting. So, if I win the money, I’m going to Aus.”

After a revelation that makes you wonder whether Andrew could just use his metal detecting skills to make enough money for his long-haul flight, the keen quizzer got stuck into business, going toe-to-toe with ‘The Beast’ Mark Labbett.

With a bee in his bonnet, the Chaser quickly engaged in a war of words, asserting: “So, you want to go gold hunting in Australia? Well, I’m afraid the only thing getting panned around here is this team.”

Despite a lack of knowledge on Susan Boyle and Friends, Richard more than made up for it with his expertise on Little Red Riding Hood and chocolate to make it back home with £6000.

Alas, despite his remarkable effort, as time rolled on, the odds began to stack up against the actor, as The Beast gradually devoured his teammates, leaving Andrew as the only man standing for the final chase.

But rather than letting the circumstances weigh him down, the contestant exhibited the same heart that saw him climb the acting ladder, scoring an admirable 15 points. However, it wasn’t quite enough to fend off one of the greatest competitors television has ever seen, with his adversary catching him with 42 seconds left on the clock.
