The OC’s Mischa Barton opens up on ‘complicated’ relationship with co-star

Fans of the hit American show The OC have been left aghast after Mischa Barton admitted she had dated her co-star when she was still a teenager.

Barton, now 38, shot to fan when she played the role of the fun-loving Marissa Cooper in the smash Fox drama. However, what many did not know was that behind the scenes, her on-screen partner Ben McKenzie was actually her boyfriend once the cameras stopped rolling.

The actress spilled the beans on her relationship with her fellow actor on the Call Her Daddy podcast. In the chat with hosts Alexandra Cooper and Sofia Franklyn, she also revealed that she had been dating her co-star when she was 17 and he was 25.

Appearing on the latest episode of the show on Wednesday (February 21), Barton confessed that the relationship had caused problems for her as she filmed the show, describing the atmosphere as “complicated”. As a result, the pair’s on-screen chemistry was seemingly believable due to the fact the pair had been seeing each other off-set.

“It wasn’t just on screen,” Mischa explained. She added: “It was kind of complicated for me.”

Opening up on her time on the show, Barton said that she had not had much life experience when she landed the role of Marissa. Due to this, she said that she felt very naïve about everything that happened during filming.

“I had no idea what I was doing,” she said. “I think that kind of set things off on the wrong foot too, because it was like – you know people who hook up on these shows and whatever, these things happen – but it was, we threw ourselves all into it very fast.”

She also described herself as a “virgin” as she entered the world of television and soon realised that she “needed to grow up quickly” in order to survive in the industry. As the youngest member of the main cast, her inclusion on the show meant that special precautions had to be put in place, which would have otherwise made the environment awkward.

Mischa elaborated by explaining that during the time of filming, she was expected to be having relationships as her on-screen character, but at the time she had not even dated. Barton pinned this on her being “a really late bloomer” in life, adding that she felt like she had to make up for lost time to be on the level as her co-stars.

Speaking about her relationship with McKenzie, Mischa opened up on how the pair’s brutal break-up eventually caused problems on set. Producers on the show were aware of the relationship as well, according to Misha, with her describing the whirlwind as “a whole ordeal”.
