TV chef Tom Kerridge drank beer while showering at height of harrowing addiction

Tom Kerridge has opened up about his “chaotic” struggles with alcohol.

He recently told the High Performance podcast: “I would probably drink a pint of Negroni, I would probably do two, then maybe six pints of Stella, six pints of lager, then there was a pub down the road that would be open until late, one or two in the morning. So, we’d get all the kitchen out and I’d get in there, then I could easily do another six to eight bottles of Grolsch, the pint-sized ones, or pints of lager.”

Kerridge then said that after that he would “go home and do a gin and tonic” which was a “pint glass filled with ice” and “gin poured all the way to the top” with tonic to finish it off. Tom admitted he could “do half a bottle of gin, 12 to 16 lagers and two massive Negronis every day”.

He also revealed that “some days it would be more” than what he’d described. The TV chef said he got to a point where on his evenings off from work, he’d “be drinking lager in the shower” while washing himself and preparing for a night out of the house.

To put an end to his binge drinking habits, Tom went to extreme measures – he avoided the pub completely as he “couldn’t trust himself” and found new ways to “release”. Kerridge confessed: “Going swimming was a big thing. Walking the dogs was a big thing, trying to just be a bit more connected to my wife, trying to be a bit more connected to the world.”

He said the first year was “really, really difficult” as he tried to navigate life without alcohol and “find new social habits” while “removing himself from the environment” which led the chef to drink. Tom’s “scariest moment” came after he tried “a Beck’s Blue non-alcoholic beer” which “smelled and tasted” just like the real thing.

Before he knew it. Kerridge had drunk “eight of them in 20 minutes” and “found himself in that world again. “It was terrifying, I was in that zone of chaos again. I’ve got to remove myself.”

Luckily, Tom now “has control” over his drinking and is in a much better place. He explained: “The fact that I have complete control over it now…I love the fact that I can do that.”
