TV star rushed to hospital with broken neck and ‘may never walk again’ after horror crash

A TV presenter has been rushed to hospital with a broken neck.

Australian Channel Nine TV star and Triple M presenter Ben Dobbin has also suffered spinal injuries after being involved in a horrific bike accident. It’s been reported that the 48-year-old Rush Hour co-host may not ever walk again.

Ben has been taken to Brisbane’s Wesley Hospital and said the accident happened while he was training for a triathlon. He told the Courier Mail he was cycling with coach Cam Hughes when he swerved to avoid a black snake that was in the road and ended up crashing head-first into a pole.

Ben had to have a CT scan and an MRI and then revealed he had a fractured C5 vertebrae which required surgery on Thursday night (September 26), reports the Mirror. Doctors warned him that he ‘might never walk again’ and that there’s a chance he’d lose his voice as the surgery was through his throat.

Discussing the crash, Ben said: “My front tyre clipped his [Cam’s] back tyre and I lost control, shot across [the road], got spat out and went head first into the one and only steel pole.”

Ben said that he told the doctor, “that’s my career,” but was told: “My priority is to save you from being in a wheelchair for the rest of your life”. Ben said he was told that most people who suffer this injury have not walked again.

Things are looking positive as he managed to take his first steps on Friday post-surgery. But he admitted that he had “a long road to recovery”.

Ben’s career hasn’t been without controversy and in 2021 he was removed from a luxury resort in Queensland due to a situation with George and Amal Clooney. He told listeners of his Gold Coast radio show that he was asked to leave the Qualia resort on Hamilton Island after leaking a snap of Amal to the media.

He spotted Amal at the resort’s spa and took a snap of her which he gave to Channel Nine news. He claims he was then asked to leave the resort and had to cut his honeymoon with wife Amity short by a couple of days.

A Hamilton Island spokesman denied they asked Ben to leave, stating: “As a premium resort destination, Hamilton Island’s primary responsibility is to protect the privacy and comfort of all our guests. For the privacy of all guests, unauthorised photography and filming of guests is unwelcome. Ben was given a warning and was deeply apologetic. Ben was never asked to leave and is more than welcome to return to the Island.”
