UK adults find joy in traditional greeting cards over digital messages, survey finds

Despite our obsession with smartphones and the internet, it turns out that Brits still get a bigger buzz from a good old-fashioned greeting card than any digital message.

A poll has shown that while we’re all about emails and texts (both 30%) and social media messages (25%), a massive 70% of us find a paper note through the letterbox way more thrilling.

A third of those quizzed reckon cards feel more personal because they’re penned by hand, and 64% love that someone’s gone to the trouble of picking one out just for them.

Nearly one in five get such a lift from a card that it helps them forget their troubles for a bit, and 28% have even blubbed with happiness when they’ve opened one.

Plus, 57% of people think that sending cards is a top-notch way to keep the connection with mates and family strong. And it seems we’re a nation of sentimental hoarders too 22% of Brits admit they stash away every single card they ever get.

This comes as Gala Bingo teams up with Moonpig to drop a cracking range of bingo-call-themed cards. Sara Jolly, from the online bingo firm behind the study, said: “There are not many other things that bring the same joy as receiving a handwritten card in the post from family or friends, let’s be honest.”

“Personal messages in any form are lovely and there’s nothing wrong with a text or email – but something about that moment of connection and community when we tear open the envelope and see the card that’s been selected for us is hard to beat.”

When it comes to picking out the perfect card, 45% go for a giggle with witty or humorous designs.

A new study has revealed that while 14% of us chuck cards in the bin after a few days, 31% keep them on display for five years or more.

The research, conducted by OnePoll.com, found that 24% reckon cards remind them of someone special, 21% say they provide comfort, and 20% admit they give them joy.

Over half (56%) of Brits love giving and receiving cards equally, with 80% saying the sender and recipient both feel happy. Nearly half (49%) of Brits get a warm fuzzy feeling knowing they’ll brighten someone’s day just by sending a card.

And 46% of us simply love writing heartfelt messages to loved ones. When it comes to picking out the perfect card, 45% go for a giggle with witty or humorous designs.

Cards featuring flowers (31%) and animals (30%) are also firm favourites. The study also showed 17% of Brits have sent cards to care home residents who might not receive any otherwise – how sweet!

Sara Jolly added: “Most of us are touched by greeting cards that are personal to us, which is why we like to hang on to them – sometimes for years.”

“And it’s wonderful to see so many Brits love to use humour to spread happiness, too. But it’s also lovely to see how many people would consider spreading a bit of joy in the wider community, by sending someone in need a card to bring some sunshine into their day.”

“We are thrilled to introduce our first ever card range with Moonpig and hope the collection brings joy across the UK.”

The bingo-themed card range is available for purchase exclusively on the greeting card website from now until the end of the year.
