Wheel of Fortune contestant slammed for losing BMW after failing ‘easiest puzzle ever’

A Wheel of Fortune contestant had viewers “screaming at the TV” as she lost out on a huge prize when she failed to solve what’s been dubbed the “easiest puzzle ever”.

On a recent episode of the hit American game show, which is based on Hangman, a contestant named Tarhea had been doing a pretty good job at solving the word puzzles and even won the game. But when it came to her bonus round, Tarhea suddenly fumbled and missed out on winning a BMW.

After selecting the “Food and Drink” category, Tarhea was given the letters “BAGELS & ___G_N_TS”. As the clock started she quickly began guessing by shouting “Bagels and beignets!” and “Bagels and croissants.”

But as her time started to run out Tarhea grew even more desperate but couldn’t come up with the right answer as she guessed “bagels and beignets” again. When the clock stopped the correct answer was revealed — bagels & doughnuts.

Tarhea cried out after realising her mistake but host Pat Sajak tried to offer her some comfort as he attempted to explain why she likely didn’t get the answer. “You know a lot of shops have stopped spelling it the proper way, and that’s probably what you were…but there is a UGH up there, I’m sorry,” he said.

As he revealed the bonus prize she’d lost, a BMW, Tarhea became even more furious as she stomped her feet and threw her head back. Pat noted the BMW had been up for grabs for a week but no contestant had managed to win it.

He joked: “I believe I get it. Isn’t that the rule?” Luckily Tarhea didn’t walk away with nothing, she still managed to take home a $25,898 (£20,000) cash prize.

But viewers couldn’t believe she’d failed to win the BMW as they took to Twitter to slam her for not figuring out the answer. “She has a BMW right there and couldn’t say Bagels and doughnuts. I was screaming at my f***ing TV, poor chick,” one person said.

Another wrote: “IT WAS BAGELS AND DOUGHNUTS YOU MORON HOW DID YOU GET IT WRONG OMG.” When the clip was posted to Wheel of Fortune’s YouTube account, even more viewers chimed in to claim the puzzle was simple.

“Are you serious? That was the easiest puzzle ever. I suck and I got it,” one person commented. A second added: “When I see a Bagel, I see a Doughnut…Easy puzzle for me.”

But others came to Tarhea’s defence as they sympathized with the pressure she was under. Another viewer noted: “I can never fault a contestant for missing a puzzle that I solved easily from home.

“It’s very possible that if I were on national TV in front of a studio audience, I would become tongue-tied and not have a working answer.” Some pointed out she was likely caught out by the fact that most Americans spell doughnut as “donut”.

“Well, Pat does have a point. Most people these days don’t spell ‘donut/doughnut’ with the UGH anymore,” one person said. Another agreed, adding: “Not a great one to pick since donuts is spelled more than one way.”
