Worst Embarrassing Bodies moments – bum problem, third nipple and buried penis

The Channel 4 Embarrassing Bodies team helped the public with their uncomfortable issues for many years.

Doctors Christian Jessen, Dawn Harper and Pixie McKenna were on hand to help people with anything that came their way. There was nothing that they hadn’t seen before and were happy to examine every inch of the human body to fix any problem.

They opened up the clinic doors time and time again to help patients overcome medical problems that may have not only been life saving, but have also led to confidence and mental health issues too. Their help was valuable not only for those who came through the door but to those watching at home facing similar situations.

The popular Channel 4 series was definitely not a comfortable watch for anyone who was remotely squeamish. And to mark the anniversary of the first episode in 2007, Daily Star explores some of the worst cases, from an anal fistula, a third nipple and a buried penis.

Buried penis

Ed plucked up the courage to finally visit the clinic after he’d been suffering from a condition known as buried penis. Ed explained to Dr Christian that he’d lost 19 and half stone in weight which led to excess skin around his penis.

This was causing Ed issues in the bedroom department but also he was struggling when going to the loo. One option that Dr Christian put forward was surgery to remove the excess skin.

After suffering for some time, Ed decided to go through with the surgery and, while he was happy initially with the results, he later discovered he was having problems when he had an erection – due to the skin being tight around his penis.

Dr Christian explained that this was caused by scarring from Ed’s previous tummy tuck and that the only remedy would be further surgery to correct the issue. Ed seemed game to go under the knife again, in spite of the risks explained to him.

Smelly leg

On one episode the Embarrassing Bodies team headed to the seaside town of Scarborough. They were met with 26-year-old Russell who had puss seeping from his shin.

He explained to Dr Dawn that the puss and smell had began two years ago, following a biopsy. This wasn’t something that the medical experts wanted to ignore as they immediately swabbed his leg and sent him off for further tests.

Russell was referred to both an immunologist and a dermatologist, who ultimately determined he had contacted pyoderma gangrenosum syndrome which was causing the ulceration in his leg.

Dr Dawn explained the condition was incredibly rare with around only 30 people around the world ever having this problem. He was sent to hospital for two weeks and had to inject himself with antibiotics for six further months.

Anal fistula

Patient Dean entered the clinic and was met with Dr Dawn. He’s been suffering after needing the loo around 12 times per day, where he was experiencing diarrhoea and occasional blood loss.

A deep dive examination was carried out with scope being passed up through Dean’s bottom and down his throat. An ultrasound discovered an anal fistula that could have been the root of his issues.

An anal fistula is an abnormal tunnel under the skin that connects the anal canal in the colon to the skin of the buttocks. Most anal fistulas form in reaction to an anal gland that has developed a pus-filled infection.

After further treatment and anti-diarrhoea tablets, Dean was able to return to normal life – without needing to pop off to the loo all of the time.

Painful breasts

Dr Christian Jessen was on-hand to help out patient Glenrose. She came to see him as she’d be suffering from chronic neck pain, back ache, rashes under her breasts and headaches.

Glenrose had been suffering due to large 34K breasts causing all of her symptoms. Stepping into his caring role, Dr Christian told her: “I can absolutely see how that’s really crippling for you.”

He explained to her that one fix could possibly be to go under the knife to have breast reduction surgery. However, he made it perfectly clear that with surgery came huge risks.

Third nipple

One patient came to visit Dr Christian at the clinic explaining that he’d discovered a “mark” on his chest. Luke had been worried that he’d discovered a cancerous spot on his chest.

Wasting no time at all, Dr Christian began his thorough examination but from first glance seemed to know exactly what the issue had been. It wasn’t cancer, but instead a third nipple.

He explained to Luke: “I have seen patients in the past with not just a third nipple, but a fourth, fifth and sixth one.” He went on to add: “It’s nothing sinister and certainly don’t think about having it removed.”
