The star of the movie Babe – about a pig who wants to be a sheepdog – said he turned vegan after seeing cast and crew tuck into roasted pork on the film set.

James Cromwell, 85, who played farmer Arthur Hoggett in the 1995 hit movie, said before filming he was a regular meat eater.

He said, however, that after seeing the animals they had been ‘working with’ – including pigs, lamb, and chickens – served up for lunch on set, he was put off meat forever.

He said: “On the second day of filming, I broke for lunch before everyone else.

“All the animals I’d working with that morning were on the table, cut-up, fricasseed, roasted and seared.

“That was when I decided to become vegan.”

Cromwell was nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of the farmer, who says at the end the movie – after the pig, called Babe, gets a perfect score in a sheepdog competition – ’That’ll do pig, that’ll do.”

He also revealed how one woman slammed the movie after her daughter turned veggie after seeing it.

He said: “The only negative thing I ever heard about Babe was from a woman who said it ruined her relationship with her daughter.

“They used to enjoy Big Macs together and now her daughter wouldn’t eat animals.

“I thought ‘If that’s what you based your relationship on, it sucks anyway!’.”
