Ian Skye had been presenting his show on BBC Radio Derby when he suffered an “unbearably agonising cramp” leading to listeners hearing a slew of expletives from the host
A BBC Radio presenter has apologised after an expletive-laden outburst was heard live on-air.
The BBC’s radio service has suffered a host of setbacks in recent weeks, including the death of beloved presenter Colin Berry. Other presenters have opted to leave the service behind, leaving the broadcaster struggling to fill the airwaves.
One station that has yet to feel the stretch is local radio hub BBC Radio Derby, covering the city, but also the county of Derbyshire. During Thursday’s edition of the show (June 12), host Ian Skye was presenting his regular slot on channel, when something painful appeared to strike him.
After having a chat with listeners, Ian had asked anyone listening in if they had any requests for songs to be played on the radio. However, as the jingle for his show started to play, listeners were left horrified after Ian appeared to start using a number of expletives.
Clearly sounding as though he was in serious pain, listeners could barely believe what they heard as Ian yelled: “Ow, f****** hell!” The conversation carried on immediately after the jingle ended, with Ian chatting with his co-host after a song had finished playing, the Mirror reported.
Appearing to make light of the situation, Ian’s co-host had joked that they had been on a training course the day before the awkward on-air gaffe. Trying to cheer up the listeners, the presenter added: “I don’t think they suggested suddenly getting unbearably agonising cramp and shouting really loud on the radio.”
Sounding rather embarrassed by the whole palaver, Ian bemoaned: “No, that’s probably not what I should have come in and done today.” He then went on to clarify the situation, explaining that listeners would “have had to be deaf” if they did not hear him curse.
“I really profusely apologise,” he said, “you know when something happens and it’s just instinct. My very, very calm producer said ‘you’re still on the radio, Ian.'”
The awkward moment was eventually uploaded onto social media, where it quickly went viral, with fans urging similar incidents to be made public. One user could barely bring themselves to write anything, and simply reposted the video with three crying-with-laughter emojis.
A second user chimed in: “I don’t think this will be going up on BBC Sounds with swearing in it. Didn’t it happen to Radio 2’s Sara Cox once?”
Ian’s on-air faux pas came just days after the BBC was caught up in another scandal after legendary singer Lulu appeared to swear on The One Show. Chatting about her longstanding career, the former Eurovision winner appeared to make an awkward admission, leaving viewers stunned.
Viewers flocked to social media to pick up on the moment, with presenter Alex Jones being left red-faced at Lulu’s accidental slip of the tongue. While there was no immediate on-air apology from either Lulu or the presenters, viewers saw the bright side and shared in their laughter at the now-infamous cock-up.
