Adventurer Bear Grylls was set to play on Soccer Aid on Sunday, with the annual charity match raising funds for UNICEF, but he has now been forced to pull out
Bear Grylls has had to bow out of Soccer Aid due to a “stupid” injury he sustained during training. The survival expert and telly star was all set to don the England kit for the charity match this Sunday (June 15) at Manchester United’s iconic Old Trafford.
With the England squad facing off against the World XI, this year’s Soccer Aid is gearing up to be a cracker, with Bear being coached by ex-Man United ace Wayne Rooney and boxing champ Tyson Fury lending a hand. However, just two days before the big kick-off, which supports UNICEF, Bear dropped the bombshell on Lorraine.
Chatting after Harry Redknapp and Steven Bartlett, Ranvir Singh handed over to Bear, who joined via video link. “It’s a hard one this, I picked up a stupid injury at Soccer Aid training. It was a sprint and I pulled a hamstring. I’m back on Running Wild next week so I’ve to try get that recovered.
“I’m gutted, I think Soccer Aid is one of the most iconic things on TV throughout the year. Such a beautiful cause as well for UNICEF. Never needed more around the world, helping children suffering the most.
“I’m really sad not to be playing but I’m going to be cheering you guys on, you’re incredible. Hopefully England have got it, I’m so sorry and sad to be missing it,” he lamented, reports the Manchester Evening News.
Bear also confessed: “This would have been my debut, it wouldn’t have been pretty. My skills are really bad.
“I was really calling all the favours from all the friends to get some tips. I’m willing it will happen another time.”
After Ranvir pointed out that it’s a “revelation there’s something” he “can’t do”, Bear quipped that “there’s a long list of things”.
“Football is right up there. I know this year is a special one, every pound donated gets doubled.
“Thank you if you’re one of the people who donated. I’m going to be cheering you guys on, on Sunday,” he expressed.
For those unable to attend Soccer Aid in person, they can catch all the excitement on ITV1 from 6.30pm, with This Morning’s Dermot O’Leary and ex-footballer Alex Scott hosting.
The match is set to start at 7.30pm, featuring Irish crooner Dermot Kennedy not only performing a halftime mini gig but also taking part in the game.
