Top telly boss Simon Cowell has spoken about his relationship with son Eric and promised fans he’ll treat him just as honestly as he would a BGT star if he’s showing little talent
Simon Cowell has vowed to tell his son Eric if he’s talentless. The TV mogul thinks it’s vital to be brutally honest – even if it’s his own family.
He said: “If Eric said to me, ‘I want to be a singer’ and he couldn’t sing, I would be absolutely honest with him. If he couldn’t, I would say, ‘You know what, be a drummer’.”
Simon is confident he won’t have to dish out one of his famous put-downs because Eric is already showing promise at just 11.
He added: “Eric actually can play the drums well but he’s quite shy. I walk and I hear him, and he stops. I say, ‘Why are you stopping?’ and he says, ‘Well, I’m a bit embarrassed’ and I say, ‘Well don’t be, you’re really good.’”
Simon admits being a dad is a dream come true. The star enjoys it more than the success he’s had with music and TV projects.
He said: “Out of everything I’ve ever done in my life, this is the best thing to ever happen to me. The very first time I saw his scan, I was literally obsessed. When he was a baby, because they don’t really do anything, I’m like, ‘Well why doesn’t he like me?’. Then at about a year and a half, we started to communicate, that was magic.”
Simon has been famed for being Mr Nasty on The X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent for years, but he reckons fatherhood has made him nicer.
He said: “It kind of gives you a purpose I think. I enjoyed my life, I enjoyed my work. I was getting to a point where I was getting bored. Once you become a parent, then it’s like everything is for them. I actually really, really enjoy his company.”
Simon also admitted he is concerned by how much pressure youngsters get from schools these days.
After seeing how much homework Eric is given, he thinks it’s too much.
He said: “I think schools put too much pressure on kids… you’re getting up at seven in the morning, you’re coming home say at five, six in the afternoon, evening and then you’ve got to do two hours of homework.
“It’s like, they’re 10, 11, 12 years old. It’s too much. I would say to any teacher watching, ‘Ban homework, you’ll have happier kids and they’ll do better.’”
