Wednesday season 2 star Billie Piper was once known as the ‘Princess of Pop’ in the 90s thanks to hits like Because We Want To.
A glitzy premiere for the second season of Wednesday was held in London last night, with the popular Addams Family spin-off due to debut on Netflix next Wednesday. Director Tim Burton, Wednesday actress Jenna Ortega and Morticia star Catherine Zeta-Jones were among the A-listers gracing the purple carpet.
Anticipation is also mounting for new cast members joining the show, including Lady Gaga, Steve Buscemi, Joanna Lumley and Billie Piper. Doctor Who legend Piper, 42, is slated to portray Nevermore’s new head of music, Isadora Capri, in the second series of the Netflix programme.
Whilst Piper has had numerous high-profile acting gigs, including Rose Tyler in Doctor Who, Hannah Baxter in Secret Diary of a Call Girl, Brona Croft in Penny Dreadful and Suzie Pickles in I Hate Suzie, fans might not be aware that she initially rose to fame as a 90s pop sensation.

At the age of 15, Piper’s debut single Because We Want To topped the 1998 charts, making her the youngest female artist to debut at number one on the UK Singles Chart.
Her subsequent single Girlfriend also hit number one, as did her 2000 single Day and Night, reports the Express.
The starlet released two albums, 1998’s Honey to the B and 2000’s Walk of Life, before hanging up her microphone in 2003 to concentrate on acting.
Two years later, she made her first appearance in Doctor Who, kickstarting her acting career after portraying one of the Doctor’s most unforgettable companions.

This year, Whovians were over the moon to see Piper make a comeback on Doctor Who, seemingly stepping into the shoes of the new doctor after Ncuti Gatwa’s 15th Doctor regenerated into her.
Though she’s spent the majority of her adult life in acting, pop enthusiasts might recall her stint in the music industry.
In 1998, Smash Hits even crowned her the ‘Princess of Pop’ and ‘Best Female Solo Star’.
Piper frequently made the news due to her high-profile marriages to radio DJ Chris Evans from 2001 to 2007 and controversial actor and right-wing political activist Laurence Fox from 2007 to 2016.
Piper’s latest role in Wednesday season 2 is just one of many Netflix roles she’s taken on, having previously starred as Cassandra in the 2024 series Kaos and as Sam McAlister in the 2024 film Scoop.
Now, fans are eagerly awaiting the Doctor Who icon joining the streaming giant’s most successful show ever.
The Netflix blurb for Wednesday reads: “Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega), returns to prowl the Gothic halls of Nevermore Academy, where fresh foes and woes await.
“This season, Wednesday must navigate family, friends and old adversaries, propelling her into another year of delightfully dark and kooky mayhem.
“Armed with her signature razor-sharp wit and deadpan charm, Wednesday is also plunged into a new bone-chilling supernatural mystery.”
Wednesday season 2: Part 1 arrives on Netflix on August 6.
