Bring Her Back premieres in UK cinemas today (July 26), spinning a grim tale of siblings whisked away by a foster mother who is still grieving the loss of her own daughter.

Sibling duo Danny and Michael Philippou are the masterminds behind this cinematic gem, following up their 2023 box office sensation Talk To Me. Penned alongside their debut, Bring Her Back unfolds within the same universe but isn’t a direct sequel.

The cast includes acting royalty Sally Hawkins (Shape of Water) and rising Aussie talents Sora Wong and Jonah Wren Phillips (Sweet Tooth). Billy Barratt (Kraven the Hunter) also joins the cast.

The Philippou brothers typically craft their stories in an Australian setting with their characters bearing the accent too. Yet, fans have just realised that two of Bring Her Back’s leading stars are actually Brits.

Sally, a household name in the cast, is a Londoner, while Billy, taking on the role of Andy, is another London native and the grandson of Welsh music icon Shakin’ Stevens, reports the Mirror.

Audiences have been left speechless by the duo’s spot-on Aussie accents and flocked to Reddit to express their shock upon discovering their real voices in interviews.

“Holy s*** she’s [Sally] not Australian? I’m Aussie and she reminded me of so many teachers, social service, councillor types I’ve known,” one fan exclaimed. Another confessed: “I’m Aussie and her accent was flawless. Absolutely flawless.”

A third viewer remarked: “Sally Hawkins I recognised eventually, never would have known if I hadn’t seen her before though. Billy Barratt though, I didn’t clock at all. We need to start airlifting their dialect coaches to set whenever a script calls for an Australian character.”

Another cinema enthusiast commented: “I knew Sally Hawkins was British, but when Billy Barratt spoke in interviews it completely shocked me. His accent was so good.”

The film’s performances have received heaps of acclaim, with audiences particularly stunned by Sally’s portrayal of foster mum Laura. During a chat with directors Danny and Michael, Sally expressed what attracted her to the role.

“Your writing is so – it’s just so real,” she enthused. “It didn’t feel like it was one genre or another, it just feels like really good storytelling.”

She continued: “It’s rare for filmmakers to be that collaborative and free, and I always felt very supported and also trusted with your baby.”
